Lake Sarah is providing the most consistent sunfish and crappie action. These fish have been suspended over 12 to 30 feet of water and biting best during lowlight periods of the day. ThereÕs a good day bite for crappies on the west side of Lake Independence, where you'll find fish suspended over 40 feet. On Lake Minnetonka, the North Arm and Black Lake areas are producing sunfish in eight feet of water. Anglers are now walking out onto the ice.

There's still some ice on the main lake but the channels and shorelines are open. The first crappies of the season have been pulled from open water on Minnetonka. Small jigs and minnows are producing quite a few fish around the shallow docks. Anglers fishing from shore in Grays Bay also are finding quite a few sunfish in shallow water. Ice flies tipped with waxworms are working best.

Ice-out here occurred last Friday. Work the north side of most shallow bays with a jig and minnow, and you should find some crappies. Expect the warmest water to be holding more fish. A degree or two makes a difference. The bridge and channel area in Grays Bay started giving up sunfish in two feet of water. Small ice fishing jigs tipped with a waxworm are working best.

The crappie bite has been very good throughout the lake in six to eight feet of water. The shallow bays, harbors, and channels are holding numbers of crappies and sunfish, but the bigger fish are being caught on top of the weedbeds. A jig tipped with minnows or waxworms has been the best presentation.
