Walleye reports continue to be limited, but the crappie and northern pike action have been very good in 10 to 14 feet of water. Look for bigger crappies in the milfoil, while the majority of pike are cruising the milfoil edges. Sunfish are an easy catch in six feet of water throughout the lake, and the bass opener is expected to be excellent with plenty of fish to be had in shallow water.

Northern pike and sunfish are active along the shallow weed edges that run from six to 10 feet of water on Lake Minnetonka. Crappies can be had on top of the milfoil in eight to 10 feet of water. The 14-foot weed edges on Lake Independence are holding walleyes, most of which are being caught on leeches and live bait rigs. The bass bite has been very good on most lakes in eight to 10 feet of water. Jigs, spinnerbaits, and plastics are producing the most bites.

Look for largemouth bass to be hitting spinnerbaits or plastics on the inside weed edges. Northern pike and muskies are scattered around the shallow weed edges and hitting minnows or crankbaits. Sunfish have provided the most consistent bite with numbers of fish coming from four to six feet of water. Crappies are tucked in and on top of the milfoil.

Find a sand-covered bottom in six feet of water or less and you should catch numbers of sunfish. Look for crappies to be hitting small jigs and minnows on top of the mifoil. Spinners and minnows also are producing northern pike on top of the weeds. The best bet for walleyes is during low-light periods of the day along the outside weed edges with live bait rigs and leeches.

Sunfish continue to be caught throughout the lake in six feet of water or less. Crappies can be had with a jig and minnow on the 14- to 18-foot milfoil patches. Look for northern pike with spinners and sucker minnows in the same location. Largemouth bass are scattered, but active on the inside and outside weed edges. Walleye action is slow and muskie anglers started seeing some fish this week.
