Things are starting to slow down, but ice fishermen are still catching perch on Bemidji’s Pike Bay. Fish have been caught as deep as 30-40 feet. Smaller lakes are still ice-covered. Call for an update.

Mark reports transition time for fishing right now. No one is ice fishing and bigger area lakes are not ready for open water fishing. Smaller area lakes should be open by next week.

Suckers are running on the Mississippi River. Perch are moving into the shallows to chase the minnows on area lakes. Try fishing the edge of the reeds and the brush piles on Plantagenet, Bemidji and Big lakes. Sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River has been popular. Trout fishing is good on area streams, try Clearwater, Kabekona or the Necktie.

The small lakes in this area have been open since last week and Lake Bemidji completely opened Monday night. Despite the early ice-out, crappie anglers are just starting to find a few fish in shallow water.
