Cold weather shut the crappies down last weekend. Expect the action to pick up early in this week with a warm-up. Most bays on smaller area lakes and the bulrushes in 2-3 feet of water should produce fish. Suckers slowing down now, reports of some still in the deeper pools. Red Lake crappie action is picking up in shallow water. Try a jig/minnow. Crappies also being caught on Cass Lake. Good early season walleye lakes are usually Blackduck, Plantagenet, Bemidji, Kitchi and Cass in warm, shallow water, move deeper water during the day. Looking forward to a busy opener. Jigs tipped with shiner minnows or a slip bobber and leech combination are producing walleyes in 12 to 15 feet of water on Lake Irvine. The six- to eight-foot breaks along the shorelines of Lake Bemidji are worth noting for walleyes with shiner minnows. Panfish reports have been limited but the northern pike action has been very good on Grace Lake, Three Mile Lake, and Lake Bemidji. Area walleye bite is great. Best lakes have been Bemidji, Irving, Pike Bay and Big lakes. Try a jig/shiner in 6-10 feet. Some anglers report catching fish in 14-16 feet and deeper on Andrusia. A few starting to use leeches. Panfish bite is good on Red. Pike action picking up. For bass this weekend, try Stump, Deer, Gull, Beltrami, North or South Twin in shallow water. The recent walleye contest on Bemidji produced a 10.4-pound walleye. Bluewater Bait & Sports, Mark Cook, 1 mile north of the Hwy 2 & 71 Intersection (218-444-2248) Courtesy of Outdoors Weekly |
