This has been an unusual summer to say the least. Spring patterns went well into summer in association with the unseasonable weather patterns. The “dog days” never really did become established either. Nevertheless fishing has been outstanding to say the least with limits of old marble eyes coming from sunup to sundown.

Crappies are already being found in there usual fall haunts. Think deep-water adjacent to steep weed edges. This pattern has been producing on many of the smaller local lakes. It has been common for the bite to go from dusk to around 10:00 p.m. One trick that works for me on a calm evening is to go on a lake reconnaissance and look for what I like to call a baitfish flutter, which is actually the scattering of baitfish due to active predators. Many times the crappies are close by (not always just crappies though).

Fished yesterday (9-10-04) on Lake Bemidji and did well with jigs and shiners off the “Rock Pile” as well as “Grassy”. Believe it or not the majority of fish came from 45’ to 53’ of water adjacent to aforementioned locations. Toward evening it was calm and the ciscoes were witnessed surfacing everywhere during the evening hours. May be a good opportunity to bring out the fly rod for some top water action over 53’ of water! I did see some decent arcs in close proximity to the schools of ciscoes. I didn’t try it, but I would be willing to bet that walleyes could be had working the periphery of the schools of ciscoes.

That’s all I have for now, but will post as soon as I have more. Until then keep the rods a bendin’ and remember that a bad day fishing is always better than a good day at the office.

1-23-05 Report

Headed out to lake Bemidji last Sunday with local area guide Matt Breuer. Tell you what, we spent more time pushing and shoveling than we did fishing. We pushed, shoveled and pulled three different people off the lake, and got stuck a few times ourselves in the proccess.

We did finally get setup in 30' over some mud. We marked fish the whole time, but they were just not cooperating. They would just come up and sniff it and then swim away. People have been experiencing the same on diff parts of the lake as well.

With some steady weather I think that the fish will be strapping on the feed bags. I will be at it again this weekend and will post my results. Wish me luck.

P.S.
I would suggest that anyone wanting to venture out into new territory either have a V-plow or a snowmobile.

Keep the rods a bendin

I spent yesterday evening trolling raps in 9 fow on Lake Bemidji. The key was to stick to the cabbage edges. I was using small rapala taildancers going 2 m.p.h. Ended up going home with a limit by 10:00 p.m. Lots of mud flies hatching and swarming too.

Fished Lake Bemidji again last night with local area guide Matt Breuer and did pretty well on the eyes in 9 fow pulling Salmo Hornet crankbaits. These cranks are the ticket! With three people fishing we boated 35 walleyes easily! Paying close attention to where the cabbage is at increases the catch rate dramatically. The Salmos would go over the tops of the cabbage ticking once in a while at about 6 feet. Colors that produced the best were firetiger and yellow dace. Fish are being caught both shallow and deep with some people catching fish in 30+ feet and others like myself catching them shallow. People are boating a few muskies also. Someone boated a 40" last night. Keep the lines tight.
