Some anglers are finding crappies and some sunfish. Little Splithand has still been giving up some hand-sized crappies. Some bluegills are coming from Poole’s Bay on Pokegama and also a few from Bass Lake. Rapids Tackle, Don Wendt, 2 blocks west of Jerry’s Liquor Warehouse (218-326-9838) Courtesy of Outdoors Weekly |

The north end of Bowstring Lake is producing crappies in 25 feet of water during the evening hours. There’s also some limited crappie action taking place after dark on Big Splithand Lake in 25 to 30 feet of water. These fish have been suspended and hitting glow jigs and minnows. Pooles Bay on Lake Pokegema is still producing a few big bluegills in 10 feet of water, but don’t expect much for numbers here. Look to Big Jay Gould Lake for perch and an occasional bluegill in seven to 12 feet of water. Ben’s Bait and Tackle (218) 326-8281 Rapids Tackle (218) 326-9838 Courtesy of Outdoor News |

We are seeing more folks out now that the weather is improving. The bluegill bite is still slow. Some fish are being caught on Bass, Graves and in Poole’s Bay on Pokegama. Use waxies or larvae on very small ice jigs. The crappie bite is still off and on. Most are catching some, but not limits. Try Big Rice Lake early in the morning or just at dusk. Trout Lake in Coleraine has also been pretty good at dusk. Have heard a few stories about Bowstring for both crappie and perch. If you move around enough you will locate the aggressive ones and get a nice mess of fish. The ice is good, however, bring a wheeler or snowmobile to get around. You can drive a truck to most spots, but why take a chance of getting stuck? Rapids Tackle, Don Wendt, 2 blocks west of Jerry’s Liquor Warehouse (218-326-9838) Courtesy of Outdoors Weekly |

The Williams Narrows area of Big Cutfoot Sioux Lake is kicking out crappies in 15 to 20 feet of water. The evening bite has been best, with light line, small jigs, and Eurolarvae producing bigger fish. The 20-foot hole out from the public access on Trout Lake is holding active crappies, as is Little Splithand Lake in 18 to 21 feet of water. Bluegill action has slowed with just a few fish coming out of Pooles Bay on Lake Pokegama, Bass Lake, and Graves Lake in 15 to 18 feet of water. Look for suspended crappies on Little Splithand Lake over 18 feet of water. You’ll also find active crappies in the 20-foot hole located in the middle of Bowstring Lake. Look for crappies on the south end of Little Sugar Lake in 20 feet of water and some nice sunfish in 10 to 15 feet. The 12- to 15-foot weed edges on Graves Lake are still kicking out bluegills. The key is to find patches of green weeds. Work the north end of Bowstring Lake for crappies as well, while the east and west shores are producing perch in shallow water. The ice is still in good condition. Seeing more people enjoying nice weather and also catching fish. The crappie bite has picked up on Bowstring. Anglers are also catching some nice perch in the shallower water. Little Splithand is still fair for crappies. Evenings seem best. Have heard of some big crappies from Big Splithand, but not in great numbers. Glow jigs/crappie minnows best. Sugar Lake by Vermillion has been giving up both crappies and bluegills. Use minnows and waxies or larvae. Winnie is picking up for perch. Try Center Bar and out from High Banks in 30 feet.
