Jay Gould Lake is producing a few crappies and perch along the 15-foot weed edges. Look to Pooles Bay on Lake Pokegema for bluegills in 12 to 15 feet of water. There's an evening crappie bite taking place on Little Splithand Lake in 16 to 18 feet of water. Most of these fish have been suspended and hitting minnows.

You can still get on the lakes in this area, but there isn't a lot of anglers fishing. The shorelines have started opening so if warm weather persists, ice fishing opportunities could be limited by the weekend.

Local fishing has almost come to a stop. The ice is pretty black and a good wind will open most of the lakes. We are seeing some activity around the warm water discharge from MPL in Cohasset. Those using boats are doing better. Reports of some bluegills and also a lot of dogfish caught there. Haven’t seen any sucker action yet, they should start soon. Get your tackle and boat ready. The day is sooner than you think.

Most small lakes already have opened and only floating ice remains on the larger lakes. The only open water panfish bite taking place is at the power plant in Cohassette where you'll find some nice bluegills biting near shore.

The ice has left most of the lakes and spring is here. The loons are back and the berry trees are in bloom. Haven’t heard of much action as the ice just left, however, the panfish are biting at Cohasset by Minnesota Power and Light. The suckers are in the streams and some folks are angling for them. The smelt should be running in Pokegama by the time you read this. Don should be able to give you a better report next week.

Sylvan Bay on the Mississippi River started giving up crappies this week. Look to the shallow bays on Little Splithand Lake and Lake Pokegama for crappies as well. The only bluegill bite in the area continues to take place at the power plant near Cohassette.

Anglers were just starting to see some crappie action on Ice and Hale lakes and on Pooles Bay on Pokegama when this cold weather moved in. The fish dropped into deeper water and really slowed down. One fellow told Don he had caught some in 40 feet of water, a couple of days ago. The smelt are doing the same. Haven’t had a good run yet and might not if it stays cold. Everyone hopes the opener will be nice. So far Rapids Tackle hasn’t had any problems getting bait. Call if you need an update.
