Anglers reporting some crappie action on Ice and Hale lakes and on Pooles Bay on Pokegama. The fish moved into deeper water and really slowed down last weekend. Expecting the bite to pick up this week. Rapids Tackle, Don Wendt, 2 blocks west of Jerry’s Liquor Warehouse (218-326-9838) Courtesy of Outdoors Weekly |

We are finally here another opener, right around the corner. We all have been waiting for this along time. I was on red yesterday we did ok it was a lot of work to get the crappies I don’t think they are in full force quite yet. The Walleyes were nuts though and we had a great time. I will be writing my weekly reports again hopefully every Mon. or Tues. I will be opening at cass lake like I have for many years with my family and with the warmer weather this year it should be a banner one. I look forward to some good fishing up around our area also. Winnie, Sand, Bowstring, Splithand Pokie should all be good this year. I hope Jessie picks up a bit more consistently - I think it will. Stick with a 1/8-oz leadhead jig and a good shiner and you should be able to find some fish. Good luck on this opener to all and be safe. Another opener came and went and another cold year. Wow was that rain and wind nasty this opener. The one good thing I have been hearing that the fish were cooperating fairly decent around the area. I was on Cass Lake and the water temp was 49 degrees about 5 degrees warmer than it has been the last few years. The fish were a bit deeper in the 15-16 ft range. We just kept working the West End (by Allen’s Bay) till we would find a school and they would bite pretty well. We were using 1/8-oz fireballs the firetiger and trolling slow or drifting. If you weren’t going slow you didn’t get fish. I have heard that Winnie did well over the weekend with a lot of nice fish being brought in. Mostly I have heard the deeper water 12-14 ft on Winnie. The baitfish are piled on that drop and the fish seem to be smacking pretty well. That is all the info I have. Get out there fishing and have a great day. The opener was one bad time. We had snow, cold rain, sleet and high winds. It was almost impossible to fish most of Winnie or any other large lake. The best reports we had from Winnie came from the west side where it was protected from the wind. Sugar Bay and the area around Raven’s Point to Mallard Point seemed to produce walleyes from shallow water. A jig and minnow combo worked very slow was best. Round Lake (by Squaw Lake) was good early but by 8:00 the bite seemed to be over and the cold drove most early fishermen off with numb fingers. Splithand Lake seemed slow, a few fish but not up to par. The Mississippi had some of the best action. Fronts and wind do not seem to bother river fishing so much. The forecast sounds good for this weekend so we look for a lot of great fishing. Our bait supply is still very good in this area. Weather, weather, weather, nothing but bad. We have had rain and wind most every day since the opener. On Winnie the fish have started to finally move shallow and we have been getting them in that 7-9 ft of water. Mostly on the West End of the lake from Mallard to sugar has all been pretty decent. I have been using a 1/8-oz fireball and drifting or back trolling and for the most part the slower the better so far. Round lake has been putting out some fish in the 10-13 ft of water. Sand has been ok at times. Bowstring is starting to pick up in the shallow water. Hill Lake has been good but mostly in the evenings in deep water. Haven’t heard much on splithand and Pokegama. Red Lake has the crappies biting in the shallow water on the south side when you can get out there. So the fishing has started to take off a bit in spite of the weather and we are just hoping it continues. Good luck fishing Jason Boser Fishing Fever Guide Service boser@grandrapidsmn.com |

You might find an active walleye early in the morning by jigging shiner minnows on Round Lake in eight feet of water. Big Splithand Lake is producing some walleyes in 10 to 15 feet of water. Work between the two dams on the Mississippi River for walleyes with rainbow minnows. Pooles Bay on Lake Pokegama continues to give up a few crappies in shallow water. Fishing has been getting better as the weather gets warmer. The minnows are moving into the shorelines and the walleyes are right on their tails. When it is cloudy the 6- to 10-foot depths are a good place to start, as the sun comes out you have to move deeper. Have heard good reports from the Cutfoot side of Winnie and real good reports from Mallard Point down to Sugar Bay. Early in the week, the bite was on jigs and shiner minnows in front of Richardson Townsites. Round Lake has been pretty steady for nice sized walleyes. Light green jigs and smaller shiners are good. Pokegama Lake has produced a few walleyes including a catch and release of 29 inches. Splithand, Wabana and Spider are also starting to wake up. Northern action is good on Spider, Balsam and Trout lakes. A sucker minnow on a jig or a spinner rig will get action. Fish the shorelines for best results. Looking forward to a good bass opener with the number that have been caught by accident while northern fishing. If the weather holds out, we will have a very good long weekend. Be safe and good luck! Memorial weekend, a weekend to remember our service men and women enjoy some fishing and be with the families. The weather so far has been dismal to say the least but I hope everybody had a great weekend. The fishing has been about the same as the weather. A bit dismal but it had some bright spots here and there. Winnie has been OK some days like yesterday were a bit tough but if you keep at it you can still get your fish. We got our fish in 7.5 ft of water up at stoney to 15 ft out in front of farley Creek. So the fish are still just all over the place. Best for me was a rainbow fireball 1/8-oz and a shiner. I have heard reports of people using leeches and crawlers already, just goes to show a person never really knows what fish are going to bite on. Other area lakes that have been doing all right are Trout in colerain, Split hand has been getting some fish, Bowstring has been putting out some fish. On Bowstring they have been deep like 20ft or shallow in that 9-10 ft so look at both places. Sand Lake has been getting alittle better on the sand flats. Wabana has been tough for the last week and I haven’t heard much about Pokegama as of late. Red lake is still putting out fish in the 4.5-7 ft of water. They seem to move in better as the weather gets better and when it goes bad they kinda disperse back out alittle deeper.
