Big Cutfoot Sioux Lake started producing walleyes on jigs and shiners in eight to 12 feet of water. There are a few walleyes coming off the north end of Bowstring Lake in eight to 10 feet and off Lake Wabana as well. Fish the weed edges of Balsam Lake and Spider Lake with spinners and minnows for pike. The only local panfish reports are coming off the Mississippi River where a few bluegills and crappies can be had.

We salvaged half of the weekend from the weather and fishing turned out pretty good. The largemouth bass were really in the fighting mood. We had several catch and release fish between 4-1/2 and 5-3/4 pounds. These were mostly caught on spinners or worms. The Mississippi River, Long Lake, Spider Lake and Rice Lake were all good. The fish are still on some of the beds. Pokegama has given up some nice crappies, they are still in the shallows. The bluegill action is slow except by the Power Plant outlet. Small leeches or worms working best. The walleye bite is getting better daily. We hear good reports from Winnie, Bowstring, Cutfoot, Round and Splithand. The best baits are still jigs and small shiners. The depths vary with the weather conditions, but are mostly shallow. It’s going to get better yet, so come up and try your luck.

The weather in Northern Minnesota hasn’t changed much, wind and rain with lots of both. The good news is the fishing has changed. The Winnie bite has finally moved to the shallow water. Most our fish are coming in at that 7-9ft of water. The shiners are shallow and so are the fish. 1/8-oz Fireballs in the rainbow color and a shiner seem to work the best. The North shore and the south down in muskie have been the best bite.

Sand, Bowstring and even Jessie has had some good fishing too. Round is still putting out some fish in the shallow water. Red lake for the crappies has still been pretty decent. Crappies on cutfoot have been being caught in the channel at dusk. The fishing has picked up a bit around the northland.

Good luck fishing

Walleye action has improved on the north and south ends of Bowstring Lake in eight feet of water. Look to Big Splithand Lake in eight to 10 feet and the Gap on Big Cutfoot Sioux Lake in 10 to 12 feet of water for walleyes with jigs and minnows. Spinnerbaits and crankbaits are producing bass on the Mississippi River, Long Lake, and Lake Pokegama. Sucker minnows are turning northern pike on the weed edges of Balsam Lake.

Bass fishing has started with a bang. We have seen fish up to 22 inches and some up to 5 pounds, 6 ounces. They seem to be right on the edges with a spinnerbait or plastic working best. Walleyes are moving to the bars and we see more leeches being used. Try the 17+bars on Winnie, but don’t stop working the shorelines with a jig and shiner combo.Work the wind and you will find fish on any shoreline. Start at about 12 feet and work both ways up or down. The muskies weren’t real fast. We did have a 41-inch and a 43-incher caught. One from Moose Lake the other from the Mississippi River. Wabana and Balsam lakes were good for northern again. Work the weeds with spinners or live bait. Justin Hron caught and released a 28-3/4-inch walleye in the Mississippi. Most area walleye lakes are starting to stabilize. Try all three live bait types to be safe. Crappies are starting to go shallow, try the reeds.

Winnie fishing is progressing rather smoothly. The fish are in the shallows in the 7.5-10ft around the weeds. You can find them at the dishes, northshore and in muskie bay. The shiners are pretty much done with their spring ritual so the walleye will start their move to the midlake humps and bars more and more. The fish are on the humps somewhat already with a few coming out of there on leeches and crawlers.

Pokegama has started letting up some nice eyes in the evening some coming in at 7-8ft of water with some real dandies. Round, Sand, and Bowstring have been steady producers of fish. One thing weird this year is how deep these fish are out on some of these lakes. A lot of fish coming in at 20+ ft of water alittle deep for this time of year.

Good luck fishing

Big Cutfoot Sioux Lake is kicking out crappies in 12 to 15 feet of water. On Lake Pokegama, look to Poole's Bay for crappies. Northern pike also are active along the weedlines of Pokegama, as are the smallmouth and largemouth bass. Balsam Lake and Lake Wabana are consistently producing bass and pike as well. There has been quite a few walleyes caught on Big Sand Lake and Bowstring Lake in 12 to 15 feet of water on a minnow and jig. A few muskies have been caught on Moose Lake and the Mississippi River.

Things are looking better up here. We are seeing the bass on the nest on some lakes and just off on others. Action has been steady on plastics along with topwater lures. Northern pike are more active also. Try spoons, sucker minnows and spinners along the weedlines and deeper. The walleyes are still going towards the midlake bars. Use rigs and leeches in the 13- to 18-foot depths for starters. Spottail shiners and light green jigs are still good shoreline choices. Deer and Moose lakes have been giving up muskies on the smaller side. We had a 43-incher caught and released on Saturday. It hit a topwater lure. Crappies and bluegills are nesting now. Try Splithand, Bowstring, Sand, Round and Winnie for the walleyes.

Spot-tail shiner minnows are producing walleyes on Bowstring Lake, Spider Lake, and Lake Wabana in 12 to 18 feet of water. The crappie and bass bite remains very good in shallow water on Portage Lake, Spider, and Bowstring. Topwater baits have been turning muskies on Deer Lake and Moose Lake during the evening hours.

The north humps on Bowstring Lake are giving up quite a few walleyes in 15 to 17 feet of water. Work the 15-foot weedlines with leeches and nightcrawlers on Lake Wabana and Turtle Lake for walleyes as well. Northern pike are hitting minnows and artificial baits on Balsam Lake, North Star Lake, and Spider Lake. Crappies continue to be pulled from the shallows of Portage Lake and Little Sand Lake. North Star Lake is the best bet for muskies with topwater baits, while smallmouth and largemouth bass remain active on area lakes.
