The smallmouth bass are going great on Pokegama and Trout lakes. Fish the rocky bars with a crankbait or a leech. Largemouth are hitting on surface lures and on Kelly Worms. Walleyes are more on the bars now. Try a rig and crawler or leech in the deeper inside bends. Northstar and Turtle lakes continue to produce nice walleyes and smallies. Muskies are starting to go on Northstar and Deer lakes. Surface lures are working along with inline spinners. Crappies and bluegills seem to be off the nests and in deeper water. Good luck and stop in for a new update. Rapids Tackle, Don Wendt, 2 blocks west of Jerry’s Liquor Warehouse (218-326-9838) |

Crappie action has improved in nine to 12 feet of water on Sand Lake and the Bowstring River. The 15-foot weed edges on Little Splithand Lake also are holding crappies. Look to Lake Pokegama for walleyes in 20 to 22 feet of water, and the rock bars are a safe bet for smallmouth bass. Numbers of smallmouth bass are being caught with Rapalas on Trout Lake as well. Leeches and crawlers are producing walleyes on Turtle Lake and North Star Lake in 22 to 25 feet of water. The weed edges of Balsam Lake are kicking out northern pike, while topwater baits have been the ticket for muskies on Moose Lake. We had a great weekend for fishing and water games. The walleyes were a little slower, however, working the breaks slowly produced some nice catches on crawlers and leeches. The better lakes were Bowstring, Jessie, Pokegama and Winnie. Crappies doing okay on Sugar, Little Cutfoot and Spider. Northern hitting spoons and spinners on Balsam, Northstar, Rice and Jay Gould. This week more people using plastic worms and grubs for bass. The Kelly Worm is popular, as it is easy to use. Smallmouth bass are willing on Turtle, Northstar and Pokegama. Stop in for an update. A steady southwest wind made the west side of Winnie good for walleyes and perch. Raven’s Point, Sugar Bar and Mallard Point good with rigs and crawlers or leeches. Northern fishing is good along the weeds. Large suckers or Mepps spinners working well. Bass action is good in the Scenic area. Try Spider, Balsam, Turtle and Northstar lakes. Plastic worms or spinnerbaits are a good start. Crappie action is scattered on several smaller lakes. Try close to the weed edges at dusk. Move around until you find some, then anchor and cast. The fish have really moved to the mid summer pattern now. We have been getting fish on deep-water structure and weeds. Lindy rig is the best choice right now, with leeches or crawlers. Winnie has been producing on the humps on the north and the center humps. They have moved up on the lip in that 22-24 ft of water. Snell lengths have been on the short side 3-5 ft working the best. In my case the leeches have been out producing crawlers. The main break in moxes hole and in front of high Banks has been also good. Other area lakes I have fished Pokegama and did real well on the Northerns we caught a lot of Bass and some decent smallies. They have been doing well on walleyes in the deep water and some crawlers but I never really gave that a try. Bowstring has been getting some fish on the north humps and in the weeds. Sand has been been a bit slow but we managed some fish in the weeds and deep humps also. Good luck fishing Jason Boser Fishing Fever Guide Service boser@grandrapidsmn.com |
