This has been a good week with a lot of nice C&R muskies from North Star Lake. Topwater baits are best over the weeds. Some walleyes are being caught on Bowstring, Sand and Round lakes. The best time is early or late using rigs and crawlers or leeches. Seeing some weedline fish by using slip bobber rigs. Crappies can be found in the evenings using small minnows and jigs. Bass continue to bite with a 22-incher C&R from Pokegama. Northerns are more aggressive and hitting larger suckers. Try Balsam, Hanson, Northstar or Winnie. Work the weedlines with a sucker under a bobber. Rapids Tackle, Don Wendt, 2 blocks west of Jerry’s Liquor Warehouse (218-326-9838) Courtesy of Outdoors Weekly |

It is the dog days of summer - hot and still most of the time. The walleyes are hit and miss. You are better off fishing mornings and evenings with some night work thrown in. Try rigs and crawlers or leeches for daytime fish and long line Rapalas when trolling. The 18- to 25-foot bars on Pokegama and the 22- to 30-foot bars on Winnie have given up some nice fish. Some good perch action has come from both Bowstring and Winnie when you can find them on the bars. Northern and bass are the action fish right now. Try the deep cabbage weeds with plastic and the bass will usually take it. Some crappies are hitting on Bowstring, Sand, Cutfoot and Portage lakes. Muskies have been caught on Moose, North Star and the River. Bluegills are slow. Rapids Tackle, Don Wendt, 2 blocks west of Jerry’s Liquor Warehouse (218-326-9838) Courtesy of Outdoors Weekly |

Smallmouth bass remain very active on the points, sand, and shoreline breaks of Deer Lake and Spider Lake. Look to Lake Pokegama for walleyes during the evening hours with Shad Raps in 10 to 12 feet of water. North Star Lake and Moose Lake are the area's best options for muskies with bucktails and Suicks. Panfish action has been limited to a few fish off the north end of Bowstring Lake in 12 to 14 feet of water. The area's best walleye reports are coming off Trout Lake and Lake Pokegama. Work the weedlines with night crawlers and leeches during the day. Rapalas are producing better results at night. Senkos are producing numbers of smallmouth bass on Turtle Lake, Deer Lake, North Star Lake, and Pokegema on the rocks and weedlines. Northern pike ranging between five and seven pounds are coming off Pokegema, particularly on jigs and shiner minnows. Trolling big crankbaits over deep water has produced a few muskies on Deer Lake during the day. Bucktails have worked better over the weeds and rocks during lowlight periods. Big Trout Lake and Lake Wabana are kicking out sunfish in 18 to 22 feet of water. Ben's Bait and Tackle (218) 326-8281 Rapids Tackle (218) 326-9838 Courtesy of Outdoor News |

The walleyes are starting to move to the shallow areas. A jig and minnow work well here. Still a lot of walleyes on the deep humps and bars. On Winnie try Sugar, Raven’s, Center and Bena bars for starters. Use a rig and crawler in deep water. Pokegama smallmouth bass are really hot. Good muskie action on Moose and Deer lakes. Northern are still good on most lakes. Crappie and sunfish still hit and miss. All fishing is getting better as the water cools. Lake Pokegama still is kicking out numbers of smallmouth bass on the rocks and sand with live bait. Muskie action continues to be impressive with Moose Lake and North Star Lake providing the best action on crankbaits and topwater. Largemouth bass are hitting plastics and spinnerbaits on Spider Lake and Balsam Lake. Look for crappies on the north end of Bowstring Lake in 17 feet of water near the shoreline breaks. The humps on the north end of Bowstring are producing an occasional walleye in 17 to 20 feet of water. Ben's Bait and Tackle (218) 326-8281 Rapids Tackle (218) 326-9838 Courtesy of Outdoor News |
