Each week is getting better for fishing. The walleyes are still holding at the deep bars on Winnie. A crawler and rig at 22-28 feet seems to be the answer. A few smaller walleyes are moving toward to shallows or cabbage weeds, use a jig and minnow or troll a crankbait. The north side and Tamarack Bay area has been giving up some northern. Use a sucker on a northern rig and drag it slowly around the deep edges. Bowstring and Sand are showing signs of walleyes and crappies again. Smallmouth and largemouth bass are doing very well on Pokegama, Trout, Balsam and most lakes around Marcell. The muskie action is fair on Moose, Little Moose and Northstar. Bucktails are the bait of choice. Rapids Tackle, Don Wendt, 2 blocks west of Jerry’s Liquor Warehouse (218-326-9838) Courtesy of Outdoors Weekly |

Bucktails have provided consistent muskie action on Moose Lake, Little Moose Lake, and North Star Lake. The deep weedlines in Poole's Bay on Lake Pokegama started kicking out crappies. The area bass bite has been excellent on lakes such as Balsam, Spider, and Island. Pokegama and Trout Lake have been producing mainly good-sized smallmouth bass. The fishing continues to get better as the water cools. Anglers are seeing more walleye action on the big lakes. On Winnie anglers are still finding some good fish on the bars. A rig and crawler will do the job yet in 18-28 feet of water. There seems to be more movement toward the shallow waters as the minnows start to move in. The best bait here is a jig and minnow. Try the High Banks area as well as the west side. Bowstring and Sand are also doing better on crappies as well as walleyes. A jig and minnow is good here. Try the rock pile and the humps. Most local lakes are doing well for bass. Pokegama has been good for smallmouth also. We are heading into fall and everything looks good. The humps and rock piles on Bowstring Lake are producing crappies on minnows. Crankbaits are turning numbers of smallmouth bass on Lake Pokegama, Lake Wabana, North Star Lake, and Trout Lake. An occasional muskie is raised on Moose Lake, while plastics continue to fool largemouth bass on Spider Lake and Island Lake. During the day, look for walleyes on Trout Lake and Lake Wabana. A jig and minnow combination has worked best in 16 to 25 feet of water. Big Cutfoot Sioux Lake also is providing steady daytime walleye action in nine to 14 feet of water. After dark, leeches and slip bobbers are producing walleyes in 14 to 25 feet of water on Deer Lake and Sugar Lake. Look for numbers of suspended crappies over 20 to 25 feet of water on Lake Pokegama, Bowstring Lake, Sand Lake, and Big Cutfoot. Muskie action is slow, but the pike bite remains solid on Prairie Lake in seven to 12 feet of water. Ben's Bait and Tackle (218) 326-8281 Rapids Tackle (218) 326-9838 |

The walleyes are hitting on Winnie. They have moved into the shallow waters. A jig and minnow is the best presentation right now. Try the 8- to 14-foot depths depending on the wind and sun. The High Banks and the North Shore, from the Rock Pile to Stony Point have been good. Northern are doing good all along the weed beds. Bowstring and Pokegama have done well also. Some fish are still being taken on crawlers and rigs. The panfish seems to have started too. We have seen nice bluegills from several lakes. Small leeches or waxies are good baits. Bass continue to hit all around. Bow season is getting off to a good start, with several nice deer taken. Rapids Tackle, Don Wendt, 2 blocks west of Jerry’s Liquor Warehouse (218-326-9838) |

Deer Lake, Big Cutfoot Sioux Lake, Sugar Lake, and Lake Wabana are producing walleyes during the afternoon and evening hours. Depths vary from 12 to 25 feet, but minnows have started working best on each lake. Crappies continue to stage and suspend over deep water on Sand Lake and Lake Pokegama. Muskie anglers started seeing more fish this week, although most have been tight-lipped with specifics. Ben's Bait and Tackle (218) 326-8281 Rapids Tackle (218) 326-9838 Outdoor News |

Big Cutfoot Sioux Lake is providing the area's best walleye bite in nine to 12 feet of water on minnows and jigs. Look for crappies on Bowstring Lake and Little Cutfoot Sioux Lake in 12 to 15 feet and on Big Cutfoot in 20 feet of water. Crappies can be had on Big Trout Lake where they've suspended over 20 to 40 feet of water. Muskie and northern pike action is slow. Ben's Bait and Tackle (218) 326-8281 Rapids Tackle (218) 326-9838 |
