Walleyes hitting on Winnie in the shallow waters. A jig and minnow is the best presentation. Try the 8- to 14-foot depths depending on the wind and sun. The High Banks and the North Shore, from the Rock Pile to Stony Point have been good. Panfish taking small leeches or waxies. Bass continue to hit on area lakes. Anglers have been catching some very nice walleyes on Winnie with a lot of fish just under the slot. Try South High Banks to the Birches in 4- to 12-foot depths under normal weather conditions. A light green jig and rainbow minnow is doing the job. You can also do the same thing on the north side from the Rock Pile to Stony Point. Some nice northern and jumbo perch are in the same area. Some bigger ’gills and crappies are in Little Cutfoot now, look for the deep cabbage weeds. North Star Lake has had some muskie and northern action. Big jerks or inline spinners have worked here. The bass haven’t gone to the real deep water yet. They biting at the weedlines yet. The duck opener wasn’t as good as expected. The weather was wrong to start with and a shortage of birds didn’t help. Rapids Tackle, Don Wendt, 2 blocks west of Jerry’s Liquor Warehouse (218-326-9838) |

Bowstring Lake and Little Cutfoot Sioux Lake are kicking out bluegills and crappies in 12 to 22 feet of water. Look to Big Cutfoot Sioux for walleyes with a jig and shiner minnow combination in nine to 14 feet of water. Duck hunters have been very successful, with limits being common. Mallards, wood ducks, and ringnecks seemed to be most evident in the area. Grouse hunters also have offered good reports this week even though foliage remains very thick. Fall fishing is in full swing. The walleye on Winnie are hitting a light green jig and rainbow minnow in shallow water now. Try the areas from South Birches to Tamarack Point. The whole north shore is good when the wind is right. You can also expect to find some good fishing in both Cutfoots. The bluegills and crappies have been hot at times in Little Cutfoot. Larger northerns are being taken all along the weedbeds. The Mississippi River has started to produce some nice walleyes, northerns and bass. The Marcell and Scenic area is still good for northerns and bass. There are so many good lakes to work up there. The water temp has come down and the muskie action has become better each week. Try Northstar, Moose, Deer and the Mississippi River. They all have good fish populations. Duck hunting has been better than expected. More grouse have shown up since the frost. There are lots of deer, but most bowhunters are still being selective. Don was in the Effie area over the weekend and heard several reports of an over abundance of timberwolves. Many sightings and lots of cattle loss. Rapids Tackle, Don Wendt, 2 blocks west of Jerry’s Liquor Warehouse (218-326-9838) Outdoors Weekly |

Trout Lake is providing numbers of eating-sized walleyes in 12 to 16 feet of water. There’s an evening walleye bite with crankbaits or a jig and minnow on Lake Wabana in six to 12 feet of water. On Big Cutfoot Sioux Lake, minnows are producing walleyes in nine to 15 feet of water. Look for crappies on Big Cutfoot in 20 to 24 feet and on Little Cutfoot Sioux Lake in 11 feet of water. Large minnows are turning quite a few good-sized northern pike on Lake Pokegama in 20 to 22 feet of water. Duck numbers have dropped over the past week, while grouse hunting continues to improve. Fishing has changed. A lot of the area lakes have turned over this past week and the fish are scattered right now. The panfish bite has been good in Cutfoot on waxies and small minnows. Perch and walleyes are where you find them now, try the mid-range depths for starters and use a jig and rainbow. Bass and northern action has been good, look for any green weeds. Don spoke to one fellow who said that he and his buddy caught and released 90 bass in one day on a local lake. Hunting is getting better. The leaves are almost gone and the grouse are showing up more. Some ducks are starting to move in also. One hunter said that three people had six different kinds of ducks last Friday on Bowstring. More and more bow hunters filling their tags. Rifle season looks like it will be very good if we don’t get any bad storms to change deer movements. A jig and minnow is providing walleye action on Big Cutfoot Sioux Lake in 12 to 14 feet of water. Bowstring Lake, Lake Wabana, and Lake Pokegama also have given up walleyes in 14 to 18 feet of water. There aren't many anglers in pursuit of pike and panfish any longer, but Little Cutfoot Sioux Lake is worth trying in 12 to 25 feet of water. Duck hunters are waiting for bigger flocks of northern birds to arrive. Archery hunters are doing well. Ben's Bait and Tackle (218) 326-8281 Outdoor News |
