Cold weather has helped to freeze the lakes. Most small area lakes are covered with up to 6 inches and the larger ones are getting there. Always check the ice before you go out as each lake is different. Just starting to get a few reports of panfish biting. Some spear fishermen have had luck on Swan, Jay Gould and Pokegama. Sylvan Bay on the Mississippi River is producing bluegills in eight to 20 feet of water. You'll also find crappies suspended in this area over 20 to 45 feet of water. Big Splithand Lake is giving up crappies during the evening hours in 19 to 21 feet of water. Area fishing is starting to get better. We now have enough ice to go most places and have a good snow cover. The crappies seem to be starting on Bowstring Lake. Try the north end off the new landing. Use a minnow and glow jig at dusk. Sylvan Bay and Cutfoot are also good places to look for both crappies and bluegills. Pooles Bay on Pokegama has produced some good eaters this week. Walleyes are being caught on Pokegama just at dark. Use a shiner and a glow jig at 18- 24 feet. Heard of some walleyes from Winnie and Cutfoot too. Again, you must be ready just before dark. Use a shiner here also. Northern spearing has been slow because the water is very cloudy this year. We hope it will clear up soon. There has been some action on tip-ups rather than spearing.
