The north end of Bowstring Lake started producing crappies in 20 feet of water. The Muskrat Bay area of Bowstring also is worth noting for perch in 15 to 18 feet of water. On Big Cutfoot Sioux Lake, you'll find crappies and bluegills in 18 feet of water and some evening walleye action near the island in 17 feet of water. The shallow weedlines of Lake Pokegama are the best option for northern pike. Ben's Bait and Tackle (218) 326-8281 Rapids Tackle (218) 326-9838 Outdoor News |

Happy New Year one and all, may all your fish be memories. We are seeing trucks on most of the lakes. We still feel that you should check before you go out as we are losing some ice under the snow drifts. The crappies have been picking up a bit this week. Little Splithand, Jay Gould, Bowstring and Trout have produced best in the evening on minnows and Demon jigs. Walleyes are spotty but some are coming from Pokegama, Trout, Bowstring and Winnie in the evenings on jigging spoons and fatheads. Sometimes a plain shiner and hook works well also The spear fishermen are doing better now. The snow cover helps a lot. The water is getting more clear all of the time. Snowmobiling isn’t the best, as we don’t have enough snow to groom good trails. We hope the perch bite starts this week. Those tasty little rascals make for an interesting winter.

Small minnows are producing crappies on most lakes in 22 to 27 feet of water. Some of the better reports are coming off Sugar Lake, Bowstring Lake, Little Moose Lake, and Big Cutfoot Sioux Lake. Hit the weedlines of Bass Lake, Lake Wabana, and Lake Pokegama for bluegills. Trout Lake and Sugar Lake are kicking out walleyes during the evening hours in 20 feet of water. Northern pike are cruising the shallows on Swan Lake, Big Splithand Lake, and Wabana.

Area fishing has been kind of hit and miss this past week. We don’t seem to see any patterns developing. The crappies are hitting if you can locate them and then send a small minnow or larvae down. Places to look are Poole’s Bay on Pokegama, Rice, Bowstring, Sand, Sugar and Cutfoot. Look for green weeds and use lightweight equipment. Some nice northerns are being taken on tip-ups on Pokegama, try the weedlines. The evening walleye bite has been fair. The secret seems to get set up by 4 p.m. and fish until after dark. Pimples and a minnow head or a whole minnow work well. Trout fishing was poor, some mine pits have open water, so be careful there. We think we need cold weather to get things going.

Crappies continue to be caught on Big Cutfoot Sioux Lake in 26 to 28 feet of water. Lower Ball Club Lake is producing bluegills and crappies in 26 feet of water. Work the north end of Bowstring Lake for crappies in 24 to 26 feet of water during the evening hours. A few northern pike have been caught in 12 to 14 feet of water on lakes such as Rice, Pokegama, and Big Splithand.

Most area lakes have very little snow cover. There seems to be enough ice to drive on. Check for any day by day changes. The fishing has been a challenge this week. Fish are one place today but gone tomorrow. It is a job finding a hot school. Bowstring and Jessie have produced some nice crappies. Try 18-25 feet with either minnows or waxies. Sugar and Gile have also been hot at times. The walleyes have slowed down a bit, however a few are still coming from Pokegama at night. The northern are doing good on tip-ups and large creek chubs or suckers. Pokegama, Trout, Prairie and Vermillion also good. Larson and Caribou have given up some nice trout on jigs and ciscoes.

Look for crappies and perch on the northeast end of Bowstring Lake in 17 feet of water. Poole's Bay on Lake Pokegama is producing crappies in 14 feet of water. Pokegama is giving up a few walleyes in 20 to 22 feet of water. Caribou Lake and Larson Lake are kicking out splake. Ciscoes and jigs seem to be working best. Northern pike continue to be caught on tip-ups on most lakes.

Another nice weekend and the fishing people had a chance to get out and explore some backwoods lakes. Some crappies are hitting on glow ants with minnows on Bowstring, Sugar and Rice lakes. Try the deeper water first. Some out of the way lakes, like Amen, Island and Cottonwood have been good for northern on tip-ups. It seems like the crappies and perch have started on Bowstring. Try the humps on the north end. The fish on both Winnie and Bowstring seem to like green and gold jigs with their minnows. This past weekend was good for walleyes and perch on the west and north shores of Winnie. Work the humps and points.

Lake trout action has been good in 25 to 60 feet of water on lakes such as Bluewater, Pit, and Big Trout. Most are suspended and hitting large shiner minnows or Berkley Power Tubes. Look for sunfish on Big Splithand Lake in 20 to 22 feet, and on Bass Lake in 12 to 20 feet of water. Walleye action is 'decent' with Sugar Lake kicking out fish in 20 to 30 feet of water. Big Cutfoot Sioux Lake is giving up walleyes in 12 to 19 feet, as is Trout Lake in 12 feet during lowlight periods.
