The Starbuck Marina and Glenwood end of Lake Minnewaska is producing crappies in less than eight feet of water. A few sunfish have been mixed in with them. On the Chippewa River, chicken liver and nightcrawlers have provided steady channel catfish action.

Cold weather pushed most of the panfish out of the shallows. Look to the Starbuck Marina and Glenwood end of Lake Minnewaska and Pocket Lake to hold fish in three to six feet of water when it warms up.

On Pelican by Glenwood, big walleyes were caught on opener, averaging about 3-4 pounds. Trolling in shallow water with shiner minnows worked well. On the Chippewa River by Benson walleyes hitting nightcrawlers/slip sinker rigs off shore. Walleye opener on Minnewaska was slow. Sunday afternoon, the crappie and sunfish bite picked up. Action best at the Starbuck Marina and the Fish Hatchery in shallow water.

The Chippewa River near Benson is the area’s best bet for walleyes with nightcrawlers. A few also are being caught on the shallow breaks of Pelican Lake with shiner minnows. The evening hours have been most consistent. The Starbuck Marina and Fish Hatchery Bay on Lake Minnewaska continue to provide sunfish and crappies. Small jigs are working best.

Walleye bite is picking up on area lakes. Try Minnewaska in 18-20 feet of water with shiners and fatheads. Reno best in 12-15 feet, also use shiners and fatheads here. On Emily, anglers are having good luck from shore with leeches or shiners. Sunfish and crappie bite still going on Minnewaska at the Starbuck Marina and the Fish Hatchery. Bass bite should be good for opener on Minnewaska in shallow water at the emerging pencil reeds and bulrushes.
