The warm weather has started to take its toll on area lakes so ATVs are now recommended for travel. Look for some good tullibee action from the deep holes on Pelican Lake, Lake Lida, Rose Lake, and Long Lake. Small jigs and waxworms are producing sunfish on lakes such as Cotton, Floyd, Little Detroit, Prairie, and Lizzie in the eight to 10-foot weed pockets. For the most part ice fishing in the Detroit Lakes area is over. It’s amazing how quickly the ice has pulled out from shore. It will be awhile before open water fishing, but now is the time to get your boat, tackle, rods and reels all set to go. Dick will have more fishing reports once there is open water. Please remember to practice selective harvesting, by doing so we will continue have great fishing for years to come! It won’t be long now and the ice should be off all area lakes. Some of the smaller lakes are now open and if the weather continues warm all the lakes should be out in the next week to 10 days. When the panfish bite begins, please remember to practice selective harvesting, by doing so we will continue to have great fishing for years to come. Although the open water panfish action has yet to start in shallow water, most small lakes are free of ice. On the bigger lakes, ice still exists, but it's expected to be out by this weekend. Dick Beardsley's Guide Service www.fishingscene.com Courtesy of Outdoor News |

It was amazing how quickly the ice went off! Ice is off all lakes in the Detroit Lakes area. We have started to catch some crappies and bluegills on the smaller lakes in the shallow bays, but on the bigger lakes, the fish are hanging out a little deeper. That will change soon as the water warms, those fish will move in shallow any day now. Lindy Little Nipper Jigs and a small minnow or a small plastic Lindy Munchies Tiny Tails have been working very well for the panfish bite this spring. Some of the area lakes that are good for spring panfish are Little Detroit, Prairie, Little Cormorant, Big Cormorant, Round, Lida, Lizzie, Crystal, Franklin, Cotton and Big Toad, just to name a few. The crappie and sunfish bite had been going great in the Detroit Lakes area until the high winds and colds temps. hit! Most of the fish were being caught in the shallow bays in 3-5 feet of water on Lindy Little Nipper Jigs and Munchie Tiny Tails fished below a float. Sunfish, for the most part, are still in the shallows but the crappies have moved back out into the deeper water areas. Try fishing the first deep break out from the shallow water bays and you should find the fish. The biggest problems have been the high winds. Be careful and wear your life jackets as that water is very cold yet! Once the weather warms back up, expect the crappies to move back into those shallow water bays. Prairie, Little Detroit, Little Cormorant, Pelican, Floyd, Cotton, Big Cormorant, Crystal, Lizzie, Lida were all kicking out some fish when the weather was nice.
