Even though the weather was not the best, the bass opener in the area was excellent. Most of the bigger fish were being caught in 5-8 feet of water just off the emerging weeds. Some bass were caught up shallower but because of the cold water temps, a little deeper was the way to go. A 1/32-ounce Lindy Max Gap jig with a 3-inch tube really worked well. Spinnerbaits also working up in the shallow water. The crappie and bluegills are going strong up in the emerging reeds and weeds in shallow water. Little Nipper and Lindy Munchie Plastic tails are really turning a lot of nice panfish. The walleye bite has been steadily picking up and should only get better as the water continues to warm. Some of the lakes to key in on are Prairie, Crystal, Lizzie, Detroit, Floyd, Sallie, Melissa, Big Cormorant, Round, Island, Cotton and Big Toad. On any of these lakes you should be able to boat a variety of nice fish. Dick Beardsley’s Guide Service (218-846-9230) Courtesy of Outdoors Weekly |

Bass are biting well in five to eight feet of water, just off the emerging weedbeds. Spinnerbaits or tube jigs have produced bigger fish. Walleye action continues to improve on lakes such as Prairie, Crystal, Round, Floyd, and Sallie. Little nipper jigs are producing panfish in shallow water on most lakes. The weather continues to keep a lot of anglers off the water but for those getting out the fishing has not been too bad! Walleyes continue to bite on Pelican, Crystal, Ice Cracking, Island, Big Toad, Cotton, Detroit, Lizzie and Big Cormorant. Jigs and fatheads or shiners have been turning fish along with Lindy rigs and minnows or leeches in 22-30 feet. The bite has been quite light but you will get into some fish if you have patience. Largemouth bass continue at a excellent pace using jigs and tubes or spinner baits. Try 4-12 feet on the inside or outside edge of the weeds. Some crappie can still be caught up shallow but most of the bigger fish have moved out to that 10- to 18-foot depth along some of the cabbage beds. Sunfish are still up in very shallow water and will bite on just about anything you throw their way! Little Nipper jigs and a small tube has been working well. The northern pike bite continues to pick up on jigs and minnows along the deepwater weed edges. Dick Beardsley’s Guide Service (218-846-9230) Courtesy of Outdoors Weekly |

Panfish are biting in shallow water on several lakes, with Big Cormorant, Sallie, Cotton, Floyd, and Lizzie being safe bets. Spinnerbaits will produce numbers of bass along the eight foot weed edges of most lakes. Walleye reports have been scattered with fish being found in 15 to 20 feet of water on Prairie Lake, Crystal Lake, and Round Lake. The walleye bite is still a little sporadic in the Detroit Lakes area. The weather might have something to do with it! It looks like the weather is supposed to get better and that could really improve the walleye bite. Jigs and minnows or leeches are turning some fish and Lindy rigs and crawlers are also starting to produce. Fishing the edge of the deep weedlines has been your best bet. Lizzie, Pelican, Island, Round, Detroit, Crystal, Lida, Cotton, Sallie and Big Pine have all been turning some fish. The bigger crappies are out in deeper water. If you can find some deepwater cabbage the crappies should be there. Small jigs with plastic tails are working well. Sunfish are still up in the shallows but some of the bigger ones are hanging out along the deep weedlines. Bass fishing remains strong using jigs and plastic tubes. Live bait on the deep weed edges is producing walleyes on lakes such as Lizzie, Pelican, Island, Round, Detroit, Crystal, Lida, Cotton, Sallie, and Big Pine. Look for bigger crappies on the deep cabbage areas of most lakes with small plastics and sunfish continue to be found shallow. Lowlight periods of the day have been best for walleyes in 17 to 27 feet of water. A jig and minnow or leech and live bait rig has worked best on lakes such as Lizzie, Crystal, Lida, Pelican, Cotton, Sallie, Melissa, Floyd, and Shell. Bass fishing is going strong with plastics along the deep weed edges. The bigger crappies and bluegills have started to set up along deep cabbage as well.
