Many of the smaller lakes in the area have ice but Dick would advise not to venture out yet! The larger lakes are icing over and with the forecast for cold weather to continue that should make some good ice! The bad news is that the area received about a half foot of snow and that could spell trouble for the lakes that are already frozen. Possibly by next week anglers should be able to fish on many area lakes. As always use extreme caution when venturing out onto the ice!

We are really making good ice in the Detroit Lakes area! Below zero temps have really helped. There are still very few folks venturing onto the ice yet, but by this weekend, people should be out in force. Ice thickness ranges from 4-5 inches to as much as 10-12 inches on some of the smaller lakes. As always, use extreme caution when traveling onto the ice at anytime – especially in the early part of the season. It’s not a bad idea to fish with a buddy just incase. Dick should have a full report with ice conditions and how the fish are biting next week.

Ice concerns are the main topic in the Detroit Lakes area. We received a lot of snow this past week and it has made it very difficult to get around. Most folks are either walking or using snowmobiles or ATVs to get out to their spots and they are coming across quite a bit of slush under the snow on the ice. Many folks with permanent ice shacks are getting water coming up around their houses and have to either move them or block them way up. As always use extreme caution out on the ice. Ice thickness is from 8-14 inches but varies a lot! Bluegills have been going out on Little Detroit on Lindy Pounder jigs and waxworms in 8-12 feet. The crappies are in the same areas in the evening. Big Floyd continues to kick out some crappies along with Cotton, Big Toad, Prairie and Lida. The northern pike are hitting tip-ups and large suckers or shiners on Big Detroit. The best walleye bite is going on Pelican and Lizzie in 18-22 feet along the sharp breaks. Jigging Rapalas and a minnow head are working well.
