Although the bays and channels are iced-over, there was still plenty of open water throughout the area. The small lakes only offered a skim of ice as of Tuesday morning. There was no ice fishing to speak of earlier this week.

On Minnetonka, walleyes biting early afternoon to late evening. Try a shiner or a rainbow in about 20 feet of water.

Work the weedlines in 18 to 29 feet of water for walleyes during the evening hours on Lake Minnetonka. Fathead minnows also have turned some walleyes on Lake Independence in 18 to 30 feet late in the day. Look to the north side of Crystal Bay on Minnetonka for sunfish in 12 to 15 feet of water, and you should find suspended crappies in 30 feet of water as well. Shiner minnows are producing quite a few northern pike on the 12- to 14-foot weed flats. There is some slush to deal with on area lakes.

Lakes are a little wet and sloppy, but anglers are going out and catching fish. Walleyes being caught on Independence and Minnetonka in the evening hours in 18+24 feet. Try shiners on a set line and jigging spoons tipped with the head of fathead. In Crystal Bay, crappies hitting on the north side of the bay at the 30-foot hole 25 feet down. Gray's Bay is a good bet for crappies and pike. Try Black Lake panfish in 15-18 feet of water.

Look for suspended crappies and sunfish on Lake Sarah over 15 to 20 feet of water. Lake Independence and Lake Minnetonka are producing a few walleyes during the evening hours in 20 to 25 feet of water. Northern pike are biting on Minnetonka over the 12-foot weed flats.

There’s a limited walleye bite during the evening hours in 30 to 40 feet of water in Brown’s Bay and Wayzata Bay on Lake Minnetonka. The 20- to 24-foot weed edges of Medicine Lake are giving up a few walleyes as are the deep breaks of Lake Independence. Crappie action remains slow, but sunfish are biting in Crystal Bay on Lake Minnetonka in 12 to 15 feet of water.

Small sunfish and crappies are an easy catch in the shallow weeds. Northern pike are hitting sucker minnows in Smith's Bay and Grays Bay in 12 to 15 feet of water.
