There’s still a decent walleye bite in the Brainerd Lakes area. Gull Lake continues to be the best bet. Most of the action has been taking place in 15-20 feet of water. Shiner minnows on a set line have been producing the most fish. If you’re after pike, check out some of the smaller lakes in the area. There’s been a good tip up bite in 6-12 feet of water. Live suckers have been the best bet. The panfish continues to be elusive in the Brainerd area. Please use caution on the area lakes. The warmer weather has opened some current areas on the area lakes. There was a snowmobile that went through on Pelican Lake last weekend.

CROSSLAKE Walleye anglers are finding fish in 18-34 feet of water. Jigging spoons tipped with either a shiner or rainbow minnow working best. Pelican and the Whitefish Chain have an evening bite going. Northern pike action on Crosslake has been good with anglers finding fish off the points. Try tip-ups with large pike minnows in 10-15 feet. Crappie and panfish action is taking place early morning and at dusk with most lakes giving up fish to small glow jigs tipped with waxworms or minnows. Try Clamshell or Loon lakes.

NISSWA Anglers are still catching enough walleyes to make it interesting on Gull Lake. Shiner minnows on set lines are producing fish along the breaklines from 20-30 feet of water. Pelican has also produced a few fish in the last week. The crappie and sunfish fishing has been a little spotty. One day we hit them good, the next it is quiet. I guess persistence pays right now. Small bays on Gull, or some of the smaller lakes in the Nisswa area are producing the best crappie action. The best bite has occurred in the evening hours from 5:00-8:00 p.m. The sunfish have been biting during the daylight hours in many of the same areas. During the recent heat wave the pike also became active as they are cruising the weedlines. Daytime pike action has been good for anglers using tip-ups and sucker minnows. Cullen and North Long Lake have been good for northerns. The perch bite has really picked up on Mille Lacs. The lakes have gotten a little messy along the shorelines. If you have your icehouse out on our lakes you may want to give it a look, February is right around the corner.

Golden shiner minnows continue to produce walleyes on Gull Lake in 17 to 30 feet of water. Glow jigs tipped with Eurolarvae or rosy red minnows have been the ticket for crappies in 12 to 24 feet of water on lakes such as Round and Nisswa. Northern pike have been active in eight to 14 feet of water on Gull, Lake Edward, and North Long Lake. Look for sunfish in the shallow portion of the Highway 371 bay on North Long and on Nisswa Lake.

CROSBY AREA
Blackhoof Lake and Perry Lake are producing sunfish along the nine- to 12-foot weedlines. You'll also find crappies on these lakes in slightly deeper water. Big Mahnomen Lake is kicking out a few crappies during the evening hours and numbers of small sunfish during the day in 17 to 22 feet of water. Serpent Lake is the area's best bet for walleyes during lowlight periods in 25 feet.

CROSS LAKE AREA
Walleye anglers are finding fish in 18 to 34 feet of water with jigging spoons. Pelican Lake and the Whitefish Chain are safe bets during the evening hours. Northern activity on Crosslake has been good with tip-ups and bigger minnows in 10 to 15 feet of water. Look to Clamshell Lake and Loon Lake for panfish action early and late in the day.

Walleye bite on Gull slow, but still a few fish being taken in the evenings in 16-20 feet of water. The pike bite has been good on many of the smaller lakes. Good pike activity reported on the Whitefish Chain.

NISSWA The fishing has slowed down in the area. Anglers are still catching a walleye here and there on Gull. The deep water has been better than shallow. The best results have come from 32-45 feet on shiner minnows. The pike fishing has been decent along the weedlines. The best lakes for pike have been Gull, North Long, Edwards, Hubert or any of the smaller lakes. Smaller panfish have been pretty active during the day on Nisswa Lake. Gull has been producing some nice perch during the past week.

Walleyes are hitting in 30 to 40 feet of water during the morning and in 16 to 20 feet as the sun sets. Bigger fish are deeper, but numbers are shallow. Golden shiners on a colored hook work best on the north end of Gull Lake, Pelican Lake, and North Long Lake. Small lakes are producing crappies in 13 to 24 feet of water. Northern pike are hitting large sucker minnows on the south end of Gull, Whitefish Lake, and Lake Edwards.
