Ice conditions have greatly improved. The slush is gone and there is around 16-19 inches of ice with no snow on top. Stop out at the Big Jig contest on Pike Lake on Sunday, February 12! Caribou Lake has had good crappie action in 15-20 feet of water, fishing around 12-15 feet down. Evenings and morning are the best. Crappies have been seen up to 14 inches, but mostly around 10-12 inches. Grand Lake and Lake Nichols have been producing crappies in the mornings and the evenings in 8-12 feet of water. Some loopers are being found in Lake Superior in front of the French River near Sucker Bay using spawn, looper bugs and waxworms. Make sure to try different lures until something works.

Last weekend’s warm weather put the looper action into full swing. Many out to fish and caught them with nightcrawlers floating up from the bottom and looper jigs under a bobber. Some great reports are coming out of Fish Lake and also some good reports out of Grand Lake. No reports in from the bigger inland lakes. Some big perch are coming out of Fish Lake, and reports walleyes and perch of Pike Lake. Both of these lakes are producing fish in 15-20 feet of water by jigging minnows. Ice is in good condition.

Walleye reports are minimal, but northern pike are hitting shiner minnows on Fish Lake in six feet of water and on Rice Lake in 10 feet of water. Fish Lake started giving up bluegills in 10 feet of water as well. The Kamloops bite along the north shore of Lake Superior has been unusually slow this week. Trout fishing on many of the small lakes along the Gunflint Trail also remains slow.

About 300-400 fish were registered last weekend at the Big Jig Contest on Pike Lake. These fish were a mixture of crappies, suckers, northerns, perch and walleyes. It was a great day for fishing with the fish biting in the 28-30 foot range. Eelpout are biting on the river right now near 131st and Water Street. The walleye action has slowed down, but the northern action has been great on Grand Lake. Perch have also been found here during the day, and then walleyes and crappies towards evening. There has been great looper and coho action on Lake Superior near the French River. Waxworms and blown-up nightcrawlers off the bottom have been working well. Lake Nichols and Caribou Lake have been producing bluegills.

Conditions are generally the same as last week. It has been a good weekend for fishing Cohos in Lake Superior near the French River using nightcrawlers and spawn bags and fishing them off of the bottom. Some were also some caught using looper bugs and bobbers. On Pike Lake there have been some walleyes and perch caught in the evenings in 18-21 feet of water by jigging fatheads and smaller shiner minnows. Some are starting to get some nice panfish on Fish Lake in around 18 feet of water in the evenings. You should use crappie minnows for crappies and waxworms are working for the bluegills.

There's a perch bite on Fish Lake in 10 feet of water. Look for a few sunfish here too. Shore anglers are hitting cohos along the north shore of Lake Superior. A waxworm or nightcrawler under a float is best. Good-sized northern pike are hitting shiner minnows on Rice Lake in five feet of water.
