I read an interesting article in Outdoor Life magazine recently.

For years we were taught that bucks use their scrape lines in a specific way. That, during the rut, does will urinate in these scrapes as well as leave their footprint to let bucks know that they are in the neighborhood.

We also learned that finding a good scrape line, and hunting over a scrape, would be a productive way to harvest a buck.

A lengthly study, using trail cams and time capture information, has showed that:

  • Almost all scrape activity was conducted after dark
  • Very rarely did they witness a doe leaving her calling card
  • Most of the activity, at a scrape, was licking of the branches above the scrape. This was done by both bucks and does.

The conclusion of the article was that:

  1. Hunting over a scrape is not a productive daytime activity.
  2. The scrape is used mainly as a social gathering point to let other deer know that a particular deer is in the area.
  3. The reason for the nocturnal use of the scrape is because deer have a hard time seeing each other in the dark. This is their way, by leaving their scent and gathering at a scrape, of keeping track of each other.

I found this quite interesting and will make adjustments to my hunting pattern this season.

TW,

The article did not elaborate on rubs.

My years of observation, while bowhunting, has taught me that bucks will travel a secondary, less traveled trail that shadows a known doe trail. You will usually find this trail about 50 yards from a doe trail.

Many times I have observed a buck rubbing and sparring with several trees in a given area. I have drawn the conclusion that, as the rut approaches, this is a waiting area and the buck is trying to release some nervous energy while waiting for nightfall and also uses these trees as sparring partners in preparation for the battles ahead.

If you find one of these multiple rub areas, and if you are observant, you will probably find a buck bedroom nearby.

I realy enjoy your post Buck - I am calling a bunch of folks to have them read this!!! I know LOTS of people who go out to the woods a few weeks before deer season - look for a few scrapes in a line and place a stand. I know from YEARS of walking the woods ALL year long that deer only follow a trail alot during heavey snow seasons. Any other time of the year they follow some very basic patterns.

If you "think like a deer" you know Most of a deers day is spent avoiding US!! In the woods I hunt we look for area's between feeding and bedding area's that deer travel - deep cover, dark, hard for a human to travel is perfect!

If you are hunting over a scrape you will see LOTS of deer - if you hunt during the evening hours!

Just my 5 cents
