Another Labor Day weekend mixed with rain and shine. On Big Pelican Lake north of Brainerd, Saturday morning skies were filled with clouds. Light rain continued for most of the afternoon and finally let up around three. With temperatures in the low sixties, activity on the lake was slim.
Saturday night we headed to Breezy Point Resort where Elvis was performing lakeside. A group of guys were enjoying the show so much that they decided to take a late night swim, accidentally falling off one of the docks into the murky water below.
Sunday was the kind of day that makes you appreciate summer time & the great outdoors in Minnesota. Spending most of the morning on Pelican, we headed to Gull Lake for the afternoon. Gull was windy with waves that made for a rough ride accross the lake. On our way back to the landing the throttle decided to stop working, leaving us motionless in the middle. Several thoughts came to mind, but after a few minutes of clever ingenuity the captain somehow got us moving.
Glad to be back at the cabin and not stuck in the middle of the lake, we fired up the grill. All tuckered out we watched the sun gradually fall behind the horizon and ended the night with a pontoon tour.
All said and done it felt good to get away one last time before the official end of summer. Thank you Minnesota!

I got to spend this past weekend in one of my favorite towns GRAND MARAIS - I tell you what - every time I visit this beautiful place I find myself asking the same question...
Why have you waited so long to come back?
This place has it all!! Every type of outdoor activity is available. We spent our time north of town off the Gunflint Trail on a small lake in a campground. We had very little rain, LOTS of Smallies, plenty of nice size Walleyes and a few Northerns helped us pass the time!
If you are looking for a place to go - relax - and enjoy your favorite outdoor activity - Grand Marais is the place to go! This is one of Minnesota's best towns and host some of the coolest people I have ever found!
This is NOT the place to go if you are in a hurry - or if you can not live without your cell, pda , laptop, i-pod ect. - All these work here - its just not the place to bring them !!!!
In any event - We had a wonderful time !!
Hope your weekend went well and that all the kids had a safe start to the new school year!!

Hi RandyMan and Skinny,
It is great to hear that you both had great times.
Ol' JustNorth spent the week end, at home, with family and friends. On Monday, our mutual friend, the Lizard, came out to fish with me. We had some work cut out for us due to the weather front that came in on Saturday. All in all we had a great time and caught 15 northerns, released most, and had a fish fry. Lizard said to tell you, RandyMan, that Ol' JustNorth might be in contention for that traveling northern trophy.

Labor Day weekend is a great weekend to get family and friends together. We spent the weekend camping and fishing. So much fun sitting around the campfire and just enjoying each others company. Then during the day, getting the kids out in the boat for some fun time of fishing. 
Labor Day kind of marks the end of summer, and with it passing we have many fond memories of the great summer that we had and we can't wait till the next one. |

Now that is the spirt or true Outdoors enjoyment. I am so glad that you had the time to spend with your family. Fall is my favorite time of the year. A little fall golf isn't such a bad thing either.
