Hi skinny,
Both of my young sons are really into snow boarding. They want dad to give it a try. What do you recommend for equipment for starting out and do you have any advice for this board dad wanna be? |

Snowdad,
Getting involved here will prove to be worth the pain you will initially experience...
No matter what equipment you are going to try, be prepared to get worked over. I'm not saying this to discourage you by any means, the benefits will later present themselves; however, trying this is going take effort and commitment.
My first time snowboarding was at the ripe age of twelve, back when you could jump off a two-story building and never skip a beat. I thought I would pick it up in no time at all so I jumped on the lift with some friends and headed straight for the top. Very soon I realized I wasn't going to make it to the bottom in one piece with that board still strapped to my feet. A little shook from falling so much, and maybe even more embarrassed from walking down the hill, we worked up the guts to give it another shot. Now at the top of the bunny hill with an instructor... (Yeah we decided it might be a good idea to get off our high horse and actually learn what we were doing) the day was filled with promise.
For the rest of the day, when we weren't snowballing down the hill into each other, I kind of caught on. I don't think I moved for a week after this experience! But that next weekend, as soon as I was able to walk again, we headed back out with much better luck.
The hardest concept about learning to ride is balance because both feet are strapped to the same object, contrary to skies where you can shift weight between the two planks. Once you get a feel for this you can move on the next battle, controlling your direction. From watching others ride it may look like the board only goes straight but this is an illusion, they have practiced! Depending on how you shift your weight, the board will slide in any direction. This can be quite alarming at first when you get cruising backwards down the hill.
My advice to you, splurge on the 25$ lesson for your first time out. They can teach you some fundamentals that will save you a lot of pain (you might even luck out and get a cute snow bunny...). Bottom line, there are many things you will have to learn on your own. There is no magical way to become a pro.
As for equipment, right now you want something that is short enough for you to control. When you get to the point where you can make it to the bottom confidently (and without falling on your butt) you can step up to something a little bit longer.
Good Luck, and remember this will be a great way to spend time with your kids as they grow up. Who knows, you might enjoy it to!
