After my article on morel hunting posted in April, my boss and I finally hit the woods here in the Southeast corner of Nebraska today, 4 hours of hiking some hills that a billy goat would have been proud of , we had 92 morels between the 2 of us, my boss had the tallest about 7 inches stem to stern, but I scored the heaviest had a 1" diameter stem and was the size of a baseball was very dense and meaty I would guess a good half pound or better...........the season is winding down for us, but we'll hit the woods again after the next rain.....and try to claim some more of this forest treasure.
If anyone else has had some success or is planning to hunt for shrooms, lets hear about your adventueres.

Tim Your article was GREAT!!! Here in the north we are hunting for morels around opener (this weekend) but with the cold weather we are seeing they will be a week or two behind. I have been checking but have found 0. Sounds like you are hitting them hard! Yummy!!! I can not wait - morels, a little butter, onions, peppers - cook them for a bit and toss on top of a big fat grilled steak!! OH BABY! Looking forward to your next article! |

TW, I know you are fishing while I'm writing this, and I should be there with you sharing the some walleyes and whiskey..........maybe this fall, all is not lost here in Nebraska...we had a good soaker rain (I say that even though the rivers are almost out of there banks) but I hit the woods again today...a place I know is hunted for morels hard, I went to the steepest of hills that only a fanatic would try and scored 29 more fungal delights...I'm convinced that it is the terrain itself that is the reason for my success, I'm just going to the places that are too tough for some folk to traverse and my prize is well earned...yet I gave away all of those little beauties to a true fan of mushrooms but someone who is so deathly afraid of snakes that he won't venture out for himself. I was in Kansas City last week visiting my sister. Didn't go mushroom hunting, but got to eat some of the morels my sister was given. Yum, and double yum. Sauteed with a few fiddleheads would be heaven itself! |

| Opener weekend we aways get some small starter morels -- this year nothing! Its been cold here so I think thats the reason! We had snow for opener! Just a little here, TW got plenty also from what I hear and Ely, MN got over 4 inches! Mother Nature - WOW |
