Hey Guys I just got myself a new portable fish house so I went on the hunt for walkable ice in the Brainerd Lakes area. I was only able to find 3 inches - thats half of what I feel to be safe. I am sure with the cold temps we are seeing that early ice is coming soon!

I was out tonoght checking ice around the Brainerd Lakes area - had everything from 2-8 inches. Gave a guy from Coon Rapids a hand on Round lake - he had his 4 wheeler fall in the lake just off shore - lucky for him it was only 2 feet of water! Still was alot of work!
I was able to pick up 6 walleye off a long rock point going into deep water in 14 feet of water. Jig and a fat head was the only way to go tonight! bobb-o - just like you I had one that was hooked bad - so in the belly it go's!!! Yummy!!
I plan on hitting a smaller lake in the Crosby area Saterday night - looking for some crappie - hope to find enough for a meal!
Hogeye - I just picked myself up an otter 2 resort - I love it!! Have been saving for a long time and finially had enough - we will have to get together some time and wet a line! Its been WAY to long!! Say hey to the family for me!!
Hey - be safe and check the ice often!! Keep it safe and have a good time - hope to see you on the lake!! |

Randyman,
I think that you'll like the Otter. I have the Otter Magnum Lodge with hyfax, rigid hitch, cover and 2 seats. Pretty mobile with pullin with the cat. Thinking about making a bench that folds back into a cot for sleeping. If you want to get out sometime soon give me a holler. We could do a video too then.
I was out on a 30 acre lake north of town and drilled about 200 holes on Saturday and couldn't find the pannies. However, I got into some perch on Sunday on Bemidji, but they were pretty tight lipped. If anyone wants to get out this weekend for an afternoon or evening in the Bemidji area send me an email at nathan@justnorth.com. Later. |

Hogeye!
Thank you for the invite! I would love to come up - will call you if I can make it - right now I have a big "hunny do list" that I must get done before I can play!!!
I look forward to fishing with you soon! we will put together some cool video!!
I went out Saturday night and had a blast catching crappie - they were in 16 feet - fishing at 8-11 feet. Had to watch the flasher pretty close as they kept changing depths. I even got a couple just 2-3 feet down.
We had good ice - 7-9 inches of clear ice. I would recheck the lakes now with the warm weather we are seeing!!!!
I have only had the Otter out a couple of times so far and have to say - its pretty darn nice! I feel good about spending that money as I know we will have LOTS of fun fishing out of this house for years! Now I need to buy a pulling machine - I love walking on the ice but some times its just to far to walk! Or I am getting old!!

Got a fresh report from the Brainerd Lakes area Most of the smaller lakes are holding 6-9 inches of ice - most of the big lakes have been iced over but BE SAFE! I would wait till we get more ice.
I have been doing VERY well on panfish - sunfish on wax worms in 10 - 14 feet just on the edge of weed lines. Crappie are doing well just off long points leading to deep water. I have seen most the crappie coming at 18-22 feet with 10-15 down being the key depth. Keep an eye on the depthfinder - I got a few only 5-7 feet down.
Walleye - Thats been hit and miss for me. I have a couple freinds getting some at 12-18 feet on hard bottom using a rattle jig and fat head minnow. Jig slow!
I hope to put some more time on the hard water soon! Will keep ya up to date |

Ice Man!! Good to see ya!! How you been??
I was just on Millacs - south end is holding a good 10-11 inches - as you move north it keeps getting thinner. We made it as far up as Rocky Reef and had a good 9+ under us at all times. Today I hit 3 local smaller lakes in the Crosby, Brainerd Lakes area and had a good 8-10. I would say "Check alot! Be Safe"
As far as a fishing report - Millacs was not nice to us - south end was kicking out lots of small perch in the weed line. We moved alot and drilled lots of holes - we looked like pro's out there - well - except for no fish!!
smaller lakes around Crosby and brainerd are kicking out panfish during the day at the weed line and Crappie at dark off deep points. Walleye action seems to be hit and miss. Try rock to mud in 12-25 feet - if you have a few weeds around it seems to help. Northerns are coming in fast on tip ups with suckers in shallow bays - 8-16 feet at weed line.
good luck and be safe!

IceMan Hey - I would really like to go fishing with you some time! Get a hold of me.
The weather was pretty wild over new years weekend - we had rain, ice and snow all in the same night! I spent alot of time out on the ice here in the Brainerd Lakes area. The walleye action is HOT HOT HOT! 15-20 foot on hard bottom with weeds near being the best. I have got the most just as the sun is coming up in the am jigging with a minnow head.
Northerns are going well - tip ups with suckers set 4-8 feet down at the edge of weed lines - end of points being the best.
Panfish - here we have seen hit and miss - I got over 40 crappies on night and the next - nothing! That being said - look for the crappie to be moving before dark into the evening on inside curves next to deep water. I got mine in 15 feet of water fishing 8-12 feet down. Sunfish are still in the weeds and offer something to catch during the day! wax worms on small pink jigs seem to be the best.
Good luck and remember to check the ice! I have seen 7-14 inches - this last weekend we counted 5 pickups driving on the ice - all were on less than 11 inches! You will not see me driving my truck on that thin of ice!!!!!
