There are several ways that indicate when another user is present in the forums.
1. When viewing the author column of a post, the indicator next to a user's name will be red it they are offline and green if the user is currently online and ready to chat. 
2. On the left navigation, below recent posts, a list is available of users whore are currently viewing this page.
3. If you see a green light next to your buddy's username and would like to send them a private message, JustNorth Outdoors members can simply click the PM button in the authors column and send a private message to that user. It actually is pretty neat. It not only sends an email informing the user that you have sent them a message, but the next time the user logs in to the JustNorth homepage, a cool, little, blue, floating window appears letting them know that they have new messages.
Members can access this this feature anytime by clicking Private messages under the special, blue Members tab at the top of each page.
