I have survived my first North Dakota winter. As a Minnesota boy, used to some trees and lakes, it was a tough one. Not even a tree to hug for warmth out here in the grasslands! How is everyone? It seems no one is posting much lately. I know the opener isn't far off, but I enjoy hearing about the home country, even when there isn't much going on in the fishing world. I recieved an e-mail recently, from a member asking about his land, and how to take soil samples, and use the data to figure out what, if any fertilizer to add, and what to plant for deer. I'm sorry.. I'm an idiot... I lost your e-mail. please give me your e-mail one more time, I promise not to delete it again. Any way.. I did get a new job, I work for our government, at the Fargo VA hospital. Please keep our veterans in your prayers. As a combat vet myself, I understand, and respect our vets, and think they should get all the thanks and respect we can give them. Freedom ain't free. Take care, God bless, Good fish'n... wadem. wadem37@gmail.com |

Wadem - good to hear from you! I am happy you survived the winter!
As far as the soil sample question - Here is what I do !
I use a 3 types of soil sampling
1) I purchased a soil sampler that you place in the ground at different locations and will give me the ph reading, soil moisture and sun level
2) I also purchase a kit that involves taking soil samples and mixing them with a chemilcal - this will also give you a reading on the above items.
3) Many county extention officies offer soil sampling test also!
When you have these levels then its a good idea to ask a local nursury and/or the county office the best ways to get the land to the level you need before planting. Here at my place I have tried with fertilizing and without - with has had the best growth rate and was well worth the effort!
Hope this helps!

RandyMan, Hey, whats up? Thanks for the good info. I use a slightly more advanced method... I start by digging holes, like everyone else, but I take a "slice" off each hole, six to twelve inches deep, generally in the shape of a "five" on a dice. If the land has a swamp, manure pile, brush pile, leaves, is wet or dry, use a different method. Take each sample, and mix them if only a general result is needed. If a person needs exact recommendations, for a hill, valley, section near a swamp, ect, e-mail me. First look at the PH, as this will tell you how well the plant will take up nutrients. All plants need a certain PH level for proper growth. If you must raise PH: Try Hydrated Lime, Hardwood ash (Oak or Maple best, Ash ok) Bone Meal will also work, as will oystershells. If you need to lower PH, try Ground rock sulfer, sawdust, composted leaves, leaf mold, peatmoss or cottonseed meal. Remember, these are not instant fixes, and may take a couple years to take effect. Please don't take any samples right after adding fertilizer, manure, lime, or any type of organic matter, as this will alter your reading. As for N-P-K, any test kit you can get at a hardware or garden supply will give you what you need, just follow the directions, and reccomendations. Now is the time to get started on that food plot for "Da Tirty Pointer"!!! If anyone wants to get ahold of me, I'm at wmorris37@gmail.com . Take care, good fish'n and God bless,\ wade morris |
