From an excerpt from By Robert Imrie Associated Press — March 30, 2005 "WAUSAU, Wis. — A La Crosse, Wis., firefighter who as a youngster cared for a cat named Fluffy ignited a firestorm by proposing that free-roaming wild cats be declared an unprotected species in Wisconsin — just like a skunk. People could shoot them, drown them or kill them by any means without being charged with a crime. Cat lovers reacted angrily as they conjured up images of a cat-hunting season. Some suggested Mark Smith, a father and husband, become a targeted species with an open season on callous firefighters. "I personally picked up the phone at work on four threat calls," Smith said about the first days after his idea hit the news. Smith, 48, a hunter and trapper, said he expected flak for advocating getting bird-killing cats no one wants out of the wild. But he was unprepared for the anger and dismay at what he considers a reasonable solution for a wildlife and environmental problem created by irresponsible cat owners. "Maybe I am emotionally inept, but I don't understand the reaction these people are having," he said. "I guess they need to be put in a room with a bunch of these cats." At least two upper Midwestern states, South Dakota and Minnesota, have allowed wild cats — nicknamed "ditch cougars" in Minnesota — to be shot for decades, just like skunks or gophers. Critics of Smith's idea, calling it inhumane and silly, organized Wisconsin Cat-Action Team and developed a Web site — dontshootthecat.com. They are mobilizing cat lovers to attend upcoming meetings for an advisory vote on the plan. "You don't take on cats. It is one of the most popular companion animals in the world," said Ted O'Donnell of Madison, founder of Cat-Action and owner of five rescued cats. "Why would you propose an idea that would treat that relationship so callously?" Trap wild cats in problem areas, perhaps pay a $15 bounty, spay or neuter them, release them and the issue goes away because they are not reproducing so rapidly, he said." What is your opinion? |

I don't believe that cats have a special protection in either state as it is, so I don't know what all of the fuss is about. |

Hello, spay or neutering them is not going to stop them from killing the birds just from having babies. And who's going to pay the vet that does it, US the tax payer. I have 4 cats so I guess that makes me a cat lover. But my cats don't go outside. If a stray cat is killing birds and causing problems then it should be taken care of humanly. Is shooting them right? I would say no. I think trapping and having them put to sleep would be better then shooting them. By the way I also have 3 dogs. So don't jump all over my cats. |
