A visitor had emailed JustNorth and asked what rifle we would recommend for his 16 year old son who is deer hunting, for the first time, this year.

Rather than give him Old Buck's opinion, I thought youse guys and gals could help him out with some alternatives.

WOW

Thats a hard call - there are alot of perfect weapons to start with. For me - I am a big fan of the 30-06 and even have more than one. I am not sure that this would be a good "starter" weapon.

That being said - I plan on teaching my little one with a 270 when the time comes.

Hope this helps!

Have a safe hunting season!

For a youth starting out...I would highly recommend a 30-30 Marlin or Winchester..Most youths are going to shooting short.Like a 150 yards or less.A 30-06 is more of an experienced shooters gun.Someone that is already comfortable with shooting.I own a 30-30 Marlin with open sights.I've been using this gun for a long time. It's great out in the woods and out on the edge of a field.

The 270 is also a good choice though.I don't use them.Too small for me.JMO.

I would recommend the youth be started out with varmint hunting. That would get the youth used to rifle shooting.Start out with a .22 and go from there.Hope this helps.

You guys make some good points. I personally started with a 32 Winchester lever action that my uncle loaned me my first year hunting. Shot two small bucks with it that year. As a reward, he gave me that gun. Shot eight more deer with that gun until it was passed down to my two sons when they started hunting. It was a nice size for youth and if they had a tough shot, they didn't have to worry too much about deflection - it was a real brush buster. My youngest son, who is now 18, still uses it and he also shot two bucks with it his first year hunting.

Go figure. I guess the apple doesn't fall too far from the tree.

Skinny and I have both switched to a .270 bolt and wouldn't feel comfortable shooting anything else. I guess I preferred training them on a bolt or lever action vs. a automatic simply because they had to plan the shot and they knew they probably would not get a second shot.

Randy Man has a smile !!

A good friend of mine just sold me his M1 - Garand 30-06 - got it in today! What a fine weapon this is! NOT very light - little on the heavy side but makes a nice group at 100 yards.

Not sure if this is the gun I will use for deer hunting this year - I have a bolt action (old Stevens) 30-06 that has never had to fire twice. Hard not to bring that in the woods!!

Have a safe hunting season! Be sure BEFORE the safty comes off!
