After loosing a few deer stands last year, we won't go into that , Team JustNorth is looking for recommendations on what deer stands are hot and which ones are not. What are you using? |

my newest stand is a summit goliath ss. I can not choose a favorite. to many scenarios. I suppose this is my go-to stand of choice, but when the situation calls for different measures, I do not hesitate for the right stand for the application. for example, some situations do not allow for elevation, due to the density say of a spruce or cedar swamp, but do not offer much in the lines of ground cover. that is the type of situation I will employ the ground blind. the same scenario where I can back into a covey of trees or bushes and strap on the tree seat, or just when I need to walk great distances and the area just lacks a good place to park your but. the tree seat has been one of my handiest tools. in areas where the stand can be left overnight without worry, I like to lace a ladder stand. a fifteen footer gets you off the ground high enough for wind/scent concealment and out of the line of vision of most deer. but when I am hunting the northwoods in an area I likely will find a straight enough tree, I opt for the goliath. I started out hunting in platform stands, and I still have a few, but I seldom use them nowdays. the need to screw in the pegs and hang off the side of the tree while doing so has added a level of difficulty the these old fat bones would rather do without. confused enough? |

I see most of the talk on here is turning to fishing, so since I stopped fishing several years ago for the most part I figure I'll be the one to keep the hunting threads going.
We hunt mostly from "ground" stands that we build ourselves. My favorite stand is still an old tree stand that I can't seem to part with - although each year I convince myself it needs to be rebuilt badly. Each year we add one or two more of these ground stands to our area - we build them with the intent that they are movable, but being really rough terrain where we hunt makes it tough we just keep adding more as we find new "hot spots". They are basically little shacks on stilts. About 6'x4' enclosed, with a door in the back and window slits on the sides and front. The door is to one side so that we can mount a bench along the remainder of the back wall [a few we've built have the door in the side though]. We carpet the floor and seat, along with a shelf [arm rest] that runs the width of the stand just below the front window [makes for a great rest while in the stand - although it has also made for a lot of unplanned naps over the years]. The stand is then put up on a platform [on 4' 4x4s]. That is where the movable part comes in... we build the two parts separately so they can be pulled apart and carried a bit easier.
I get a lot of grief for the next part a lot, but lighting up a sunflower heater makes for the most comfortable sit you'll ever have in the woods. I haven't spent more than ten minutes in any of these stands before I'm down to a sweatshirt. I've had a lot of deer just outside the window of these stands and I can guarantee that deer do not even notice the sound of the heater - or if they do they sure don't seem to mind.
I'm sure I'm not the only one that uses this "model" - but you never know I guess, I have never seen any others like them. I have picts somewhere that I'll post if I find them - otherwise maybe I'll take a few picts when I go up in a couple weeks to start scouting for the moose season. |

Hey Ryan and Jigglestick! Stand hunting can be done a number of ways as stated above - The ground stand offers some level of cover but any time you can put yourself up out of the direct view of the deer, the better the chance he/she will not see or smell you.
Ryan - as far as the heater - here in northern Minnesota lots of folks use these. I know from experience this will decrease your chances of seeing big deer. An old timer told me it like this ; you are hunting in a deers home! if the tables were turned and the deer were hunting you - would you notice them on the floor of your house? would you smell something that was unusual in your house? - Deer do not have as big of brains as we do - but they do notice changes in thier homes. If you want to increase your ability to take deer - decrease the deers ability to know you are there.
Just my 2.5 cents ;-)
Send some pictures! would love to see your design! I have some ground stands that need to be replaced and would like some pointers.

| I agree with you. I just have never had a deer react to the heaters at all. Maybe it has to do with the enclosed stands we use them in. I never use them when I'm in my tree stand. |

Hi Ryan,
Welcome to Justnorth
Thanks for the input. Great info. I will be putting together an article on portable stump hunting later this summer. I think it will interest you.

I may not know what you guys are talkin about because I do not hunt! But last night I went to a friends and they have a screened in tent sitting on the edge of a field. We were talking loud and carring on all the same time deer and wild turkey walked within 80-100 yards away. They did not seem to care we were there. Every now and then the bucks would look over.
Is that what its like deer hunting? Cuz other than the cold weather I think I could try it?? Seems pretty easy? |

Hey Babes I know what you are saying - I have deer in my yard all the time. As a deer hunter i can tell you that it is pretty easy to shot a small deer, a good size doe is pretty hard and a beautiful buck is REAL hard!
good luck |
