It seems the latest issue be bantered about the Minnesota DNR is legalizing deer baiting. The advocates say that it is legal to bait bear, legal to use bait for fishing and you should be allowed to bait deer.
The opposing view is that the baiting of deer is not a ethical practice.
The DNR contends that, due to the increasing deer population, hunting pressure alone is not controlling this growth. If a law change that allowed deer baiting was enacted, it would still be a hunters choice to bait or not. Not all zones and areas would have deer baiting enacted. Of course, if the deer population did decrease, due to such things as a severe winter, the law could be rescinded or suspended.
What do you think? |

I try to keep an open mind about most things - but here I have a VERY closed mind! Deer baiting is wrong!
I understand the view - The advocates say that it is legal to bait bear, legal to use bait for fishing and you should be allowed to bait deer.
BUT!!
I prefer to add to the deers environment plants that help keep them healthy. Often this type of plantings ( food plots and the alike ) help the deer make it when winter is bad and helps increase growth.
If you are looking for an edge to decrease populations of deer, look to legalizing decoys - this is a proven way to increase deer havest.
My 2 cents! |

While we are on the subject of food, here is some more food for thought:
Federal sharpshooters have begun the process of removing deer within a 140 square mile area of northwestern Minnesota this past Tuesday.
Officials from the United States Department of Agriculture will continue to shoot deer in order to reduce the risk of bovine tuberculosis, they claim is spreading to wild deer and cattle in the region. These sharpshooters will continue shooting deer through early April. Within the next 12 weeks, additional shooters will be in the area to accelerate the process.
Many local residents are concerned deer hunting opportunities, next fall, will be minimal with so many deer being taken for testing.
If this type of herd thinning is justified for disease control, is it also a justified means of population control in Metro areas as well? |

| this will be the last time i pop off on deer baiting....if you've ever hung a stand between a bedding area and a food source of any kind...naturally occuring acorns for instance...its hunting over bait...it drew the deer in... |

OK trout whisperer - I see your point My mind is opening a little - I still feel that hunting deer over a pile of corn is wrong but that being said - I plant things to draw them into my land every year so this could be close to the same thing? |

randy my man....im not trying to make anyone's point right or wrong....some use a bow, some blackpowder, some a pistol, some a rifle...some want to bait, some don't...deer hunting is not a one size fits all rule..if youre against baiting...don't.
...I miss my red wool....but I live with blaze orange...the laws are my problems with baiting..the dnr tries to regulate way to much...and it degrades the outdoor experience... my little trout whisperer opinion...and I wont pop off again...yeah -sure- you betcha... |

| I don't think that I would food bait or hunt an area where it was done. Part of the fun for me is figuring out what they are eating, setting up and getting them on their own terms. I think that it is already done to a certain extent with mock scrapes, minerals, food plots etc. I think that food baiting would have the potential to change their natural behavior and patterns as well as actually draw them out of areas and concentrate them into baited areas resulting in less dispersal, smaller racks and so on. |

I'd hope baiting would NOT be legalized. Beyond the ethics are the disease concerns . A study in Michigan a few years back showed that with 5 gallons of corn the mean number of deer to visit in 60 minutes was 35. One deer has a disease such as TB and baiting can increase the potential disease transmission. In no way am I saying keeping baiting illegal will stop it, but it sure can help.
Another visual discussion is the difference between feeding and baiting. For practicaility I conisder placing of food intentionally for hunting as baiting. Planting corn or alfalfa is NOT baiting. Just a couple thoughts--good discussion. |

trout w. took it upon himself to send an email joking about my post and questioning the disease implications. It's not a joke--just a quick fyi Michigan has been battling TB since 1994. also trout w if you don't think disease is an issue look at NW MN and the TB concerns. Tell any state where their cattle status is no longer TB free that disease transmission from deer to cattle is not an issue.
thanks,
Doug |
