Apply Now for Archery Deer Hunt Vermillion Highlands Research Recreation and Wildlife Management Area (WMA)
The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is accepting applications from archery hunters who wish to hunt the newly established Vermillion Highlands Research Recreation and Wildlife Management Area (WMA) in Dakota County.
Thirty permits will be drawn for the archery hunt, which will be held Sept. 15-Nov. 2 on portions of the 2,840-acre WMA. This multi-use WMA is being managed in cooperation with the University of Minnesota and Dakota County.
Application forms are available by calling (651) 772-7983 or online at www.dnr.state.mn.us.
Completed application should be mailed by Aug. 17 to: Vermillion Highlands Archery Hunt, DNR Regional Wildlife Office, 1200 Warner Road, St. Paul, MN 55106.
Apply Now for Minnesota Elk Hunt
The July 13 deadline to apply for the 2007 Minnesota elk hunt is approaching. The hunt is being held to reduce the elk population, located in a zone around Grygla, Minn., from the present level of 55 animals.
There will be no bull permits offered this year as there were six bull elk mortalities documented in 2006. Two of the bulls were legally taken during the 2006 season, one was taken mistakenly during the antlerless season, one died presumably of brain worm and the remaining two were found dead from unknown causes.
The antlerless elk hunt seasons are Sept. 15-23 and Dec. 1-9. Applicants interested in the early hunt should select area 10 while applicants choosing to apply for the late hunt should select area 20. The early hunt will be a good opportunity to try calling a bull then taking a cow from the harem. During the late season, elk should be congregated in larger groups with snow on the ground, making tracking and trailing easier.
DNR Accepting Applications for Camp Ripley Archery Hunts
The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has begun accepting applications for the 2007 regular archery deer hunts at Camp Ripley near Little Falls. Hunters may pick from only one of two hunting seasons, Oct. 18-19 (code 668) or Oct. 27-28 (code 669). A total of 5,000 permits, 2,500 per two-day hunt, will be made available.
Apply Now for Prairie Chicken/Fall Turkey Hunts
Hunters who wish to apply for one of 182 permits for the 2007 Minnesota prairie chicken season or for one of 4,490 permits for the fall turkey hunt must do so by July 27. Applications are available wherever hunting and fishing licenses are sold.
PRAIRIE CHICKEN SEASON
The five-day prairie chicken season, which will begin on Oct. 20, is open to Minnesota residents only. Hunters will be charged a $4 application fee and may apply individually or in groups up to four. Prairie chicken licenses cost $20.
FALL TURKEY SEASON
Applications for this year's fall turkey hunt are also being accepted at ELS vendors across Minnesota. Fall turkey hunters may apply for one of 4,490 permits to hunt in one of 33 permit areas from Oct. 17-21 or Oct. 24-28. The application fee is $3. The license costs $18 for residents and $73 for nonresidents. A $5 stamp validation is also required for turkey hunters 18 years of age or older.
The deadline for applications for both the prairie chicken and fall turkey hunts is July 27. Application worksheets and maps of permit areas for both hunts are available on the DNR Web site at www.dnr.state.mn.us. |
