What are you doing to get ready for the upcoming hunting season?

I have been adding food plots to my deer hunting, training the dog, shooting lots of targets - am I a Crazy Lady - or do others spend all kinds of time getin ready?

I agree!
Anything one can do now before the hunt will better your odds of havin a great hunt this season.

As for me - I have been hitting the clay pretty hard! I need to get better at wing shots and this seems to be helping.

You got it right! Nothing better than getting ready.... except for the actual hunt! I've been doing a lot of early scouting, especially with moose season coming fast [and now I've added a bear hunt too]. I've been to the range a few times so far... I love shooting, and my younger kids that can't join me hunting yet have a blast there as well.

RandyMan - There is no better way to improve wing shots than sporting clays. It's amazing how much larger, and slower, birds look after a few rounds of sporting clays... not to mention what it does for your speed, etc. I used to be in a couple sporting clays leagues, but am just now getting back into it after a couple years off.

Grouselady - your not crazy!!

I just spent the last weekend in the woods - checking the food plots, looking over the deer stands and checking my favorite grouse spots! We attepted to take some pictures of them this weekend but they all got up way before we could see them. Smart birds!

I enjoy the pre hunt more than the hunt! Its a great time to get in the woods with the kids and show them the outdoors!

Hey RandyMan
I have been busy hitting the woods as hard as possible with all the rain, cold weather and such. So far I have done very well, the key has been early mornings when there is some clear weather. Most have been near thick brush and have been getting up way before you knwo they are there. I was using my dog but have found that walking slow and listening is the best!

I think that for the first time ever I was actually over-groused this year!  Yup, you heard right.... I actually hit a point last weekend where I was just waving at them as I walked by.  Been a long time since I've seen numbers like I've seen this year.  Also, very evident that there was a second hatch this year [at least in the area our shack is].  About half the grouse we shot were about half size.  I assume that is because there was a rare second hatch... brought on by the dry conditions maybe?  Anyway, now it's time to hit the woods for deer... of which I've also seen more of them than I have since the early 90s.  And I guess I'm not the only one to notice since they made our area an intensive harvest area this year - don't see that too often in the arrowhead.  Don't know that it will help too much though - hunting pressure around us is very low and I've only seen a few does this fall that didn't have at least one fawn with them.
