I am new to duck hunting and wated to know something.  Is it legal to shoot duck while they are on the water (swimming)?  I was told today that it is illegal, but I can't find anything about it.  thanks for any help.  And I could also use any other tips you may have.  I'm always willing to learn more about my newfound love.

check out my online hunting journal. It's not that informative, but it might provide a laugh

dont know about michigan law........but where i live the term is locally referred to as ground swatting.....some take offense to the practice when done with ruffed grouse or ducks.....but its perfectly acceptable with turkeys for example.....and if you shoot a standing deer thats holier than shooting a running deer.......my point is there are so many opinions on the topic it would scare you......i will say this .......to ground swat a grouse......i have no problem with .......the bird can be dispatched quickly and your backstop is the ground..if no dogs involved..........now try to balance that with this......a duck sitting on water.....most of its vitals are below the water line......a duck in the air is an easier duck to dispatch quickly...a cleaner kill.......and if the backstop is the rest of the lake well then the bbs just hit the lake bottom.....catch my drift here....
im sure someone from michigan dnr could shed some light......or the outdoor writer for the detroit free press has a question and answer forum and he is very helpful......check him online and good luck.......tw

Hi chuckwagon,

I agree with what Trout Whisperer has said.

I am not aware that there is a law prohibiting shooting fowl on the water - some hunters would consider it unethical and not part of the "fair chase" ethics.

However, I have submitted the question to the Michigan DNR and as soon as I receive a response, I will pass it on.

chuckwagon,

I have made your request to the Michigan DNR.

The response:

I should receive a response by e-mail within the next 20 business days.

Until then, my friend, you will have to rely on you own moral compass.
