Only 1 of 2 deer I saw opening morning in Nebraska, had a 1 1/2 yr. old fork horn walk past my stand 3 different times and he disappeared down a trail and spooked this buck from his bed right to me and my .270 he came up the trail very fast and didn't stop until he was only 35 yards away (I know a bow shot) but what could I do he is the best buck I've taken so far and one that is finally worth the cost of taxidermist.

At 5 am is was 45 degrees at 7:30 when this boy came out I would guess around 50, thinking he was going to stay in his bed but the fork horn spooked him out. |

We have had very strange weather the last few years for opening morning and the week of rifle season in Nebraska.....there were no bucks chasing does at all (the state usually puts the season in the peak of the rut to increase success and decrease the deer population) a lot of deer were still taken but many hunters were having more luck later in the week as it cooled off some.....I feel very fortunate to have gotten such a nice deer on such a 'warm' day.....this picture was taken at about 10:30 am that morning 'by then 64 degrees' and as soon as we were done he was checked taken to the processor, caped (then I was off to the taxidermist) and he is turning into jerky and salami. Our muzzleloader season starts Dec. 1 (Sat.) and the weather is supposed to be more like it should be around 20 in the morning with a 10 mph N. wind and some of the deer are starting to herd up but I still see bucks with their noses to the ground cruising so I think it could get fairly exciting Saturday morning.
Good luck to all and take care.

Hey Tim, Congrats on that buck. He is a dandy! I see you harvested him in Nebraska. Do you hail from Nebraska? I ask becuase many of my inlaws are from Nebraska. Mostly out around the Ainsworth and the Sand Hills region. They have had excellent success deer hunting in that area. Anywhere close to where you found this big guy? Again, congrats on that fine buck. |

I live in the Southeast corner of Nebraska, a little town named Auburn it is 65 miles south of Omaha.
Just want to let Troutwhisperer know that Ma Nature has made it to my part of the state, opening morning of MZ season we had freezing rain that ending up being half an inch thick on everything so I didn't make it out first day, and 2nd day it was 12 degrees with a 25 mph wind and I was the only thing moving in the timber that day....I'm still trying to 'defrost'. |

we got a bit of the ma nature this weekend ourselves...15 inches of snow in one dump...it was 6 above this morning.........that puts the clamps on our grouse hunting...but i have two budiescoming for a snowshoe hare hunt... your freezing rain sounds less appealing then are snow fall....do you have quail hunting where you are???? |

The weather continues to get stranger in my corner of the state, later in the afternoon of Dec. 1st after the freezing rain at sunset actually it got up to 55 degrees with a stiff south wind that melted everything and thank goodness dried the roads out, now we are at 32 degrees at 6am but yesterday at this time it was 15 (makes it hard to dress for the hunt unless you pack clothes with you and layer up when you get to the woods).
Trout as far as quail and pheasant they used to be very plentiful but the turkeys have taken over where I hunt so that is the only birds in my area. Nebraska has a great program where they will pay back folks that will plant grass areas to hold the quail and pheasants but my families farm is striclty cropland and 35 of the densest acres of timber I ever been around so its just deer and turkeys for me.
On that note I did take a 3 1/2 year old 'boss tom' back in April that weighed 24 1/2 lbs. and had 10 in. and 6 in. beards so I'm 2 for 2 on trophies so far this year.
Would like to have a little of your snow though with my woods being so thick it would sure help take away some of the deers natural camo., I still have 2 doe tags that I would like to fill. |

The best luck I've had with turkeys is 3 diferent methods, you either have to slow roast in the oven just like a domestic turkey 'only even slower' I'll usually season just like a Thanksgiving bird but set the oven at 225 and put it in the oven just before you go to bed let it cook for a good 9 or so hours it will dry out some (thats what gravy is for) but it will taste great and not be tough at all.
2nd is to cut up and smoke at low temp.,but that can make it a little more like 'turkey jerky' but still very good.
My favorite is to portion the breast into 6 to 8 oz. steaks and marinate them in Italian dressing overnight, then grill til the juices are clear has almost a 'pork chop texture and flavor', you have to be creative and not be in a hurry to when messin with them turks they get a lot more excersise than their penned up cousins and their muscles are much tougher to break down when cooking, give these recipes a try and see if you taste the difference. |

We are getting it here also predicted for 5 inches total, I commend all you folks that live in those 'lake effect' snow areas that would be way too much for me.....TW I will see what I can find out about quail in my area of the state and let you know.....I sure miss them at my farm......probably the best 'wild' bird I've ever eaten |

Well we ended up with about 5 to 6 inches and getting flurries again this morning......forecast is for an inch of freezing rain tomorrow (we are so excited.....not) then temp is supposed to hit single digits, but at least we are on the positive side of zero but that will make any freezing rain we get hard as concrete.......so I should have an exciting weekend the deer are herding up and that snow really makes 'em stand out.
Do your best to stay warm I'm getting chilled just hearing about your weather.

Fishing is a subject we don't talk much about in the southeast corner of Nebraska,...........in my opinion we don't have anything worth a darn, I go with my girlfriends dad 3 to 4 times a year to South Dakota 'Big Bend Dam' try to hit the white bass run and usually always get our limit of walleyes (and we only fish from the bank.!) . Once you get south of Sioux City the Missouri river looks more like runoff from an outhouse and in South Dakota it is still clean and the catfish in SD taste as good as the walleye......it is just not the same body of water in my area if I want to drive a couple of hundred miles there are some very nice reservoirs to fish but nothing closer then that.
As far as ice fishing around here some locals will hit the bigger farm ponds and lakes but I personally have never tried it. I seem to lose my desire to fish when hunting season rolls around.
Good luck and bundle up ....and could close that North door on your way out it is 5 degrees here I think I feel a draft from your place..ha ha.
