Greetings from the deer woods of Southeast Nebraska.

For almost a month I watched 2 seperate small herds of does and yearlings use the same route every morning that I was in the woods, so this morning I found 'the' spot that would give me a shot at one of those mature does, and sure as could be the deer showed up...."BEHIND ME" at 30 yards on a trail that hadn't had hardly any use this season..............the lead doe had me pegged.....the 2nd in line was a very nice matron doe and was almost clear of a fallen tree so that I could get the sights on her with almost no movement (remember the lead doe is locked up on me like the best bird dog) but I'm holding my own, then a slight breeze and the lead doe bolts taking ten 'tails' with her all waving goobye.

We are in a serious melt now and I don't know if I'll get to the woods again before the end of our late antlerless season Jan. 15th, but even if I do I guess I'll get out the TOPO map and throw a dart and where it lands is where I'll hunt.

Here is a topic for debate I have seen before on many forums......and this is my opinion........tell me what you all think.

Getting a shot at a doe is harder than a buck, sure big bucks go almost all nocturnal except for the rut, they use the more hidden trails, but a wiley mature doe got that big by being smart also.....and they seem so much more nervous and alert in the woods than bucks......I have stared down 1 or 2 bucks in my day and been sucessful at not spooking them but have never done the same with a doe and I swear the only thing I can imagine that I did different was blink.

So for me harvesting a mature doe is as much of a trophy as a mature buck.

Tell your opinion.

i was wondering why you been so quiet- your out trying to skewer a deer...im no trophy hunter..any whitetail in bow range...you did alot more correct than wrong...massively racked bucks...they aint no mirage....but they act that way....lead does or big adult does..probably the same thing...tim when you connect ...toss a photo this way...tw

I agree with you! large doe's are VERY smart and know the woods they are in and the smells within. I feel you have a better chance of hitting a big buck during the rut - they are true guys in this event! when chasin tail we let our guard down and are no were near as carefull as we are normaly.

I hunt for food myself - as long as its over a couple years old, big body and in range --- Its mine!! ;-)

I too hunt for food, and when I first started hunting I took my share of 1 1/2 year olds, but now I let them walk which is why I feel I got such a nice deer this year..... 5 years ago I would have shot a young buck just becasue it was opening day and I wanted to be done......now I take vacation that week of the season so I can find the 'right' deer to harvest and not just throw lead at the first thing I see.

Randy and TW, the salami, slim jims, and jerky are packed and will ship out today............hope you enjoy them at the trout-a-thon.

I know that 'Buck' posted instructions on how to post a pic., but my girlfriend and I can't seem to get her digital camera to download to her desktop and let us be able to post pics. but we are still working on it, I did send an 8x10 just a paper copy of the same pic. that Buck posted for me on the hunting forum with me and my buck and a few business cards with the meat to pass out if anyone so wishes, so you can at least toast my picture.

As far as the rest of the deer season.................I never thought I'd say this but "we did a good freeze" to harden back up the snow so I can get to the woods, anywhere I could hunt around here is surrounded by crop fields and will just be too muddy if we stay in the current weather pattern.

That should say "we NEED a good freeze" my spelling is usually pretty good but the connection from my brain to my fingers must have a short.

Buck, I will try to learn how to navigate better within the forum it's obvious I'm not very good at it.

Trout, now I see how you all stand that cold so well up north,.......you are full of anti-freeze.......Take care and enjoy the vittles.

TW, I just bought a new house in July and if I could afford it I would be there in a heartbeat......I have no doubt the 'north country' is a formidable foe and one that I would have to learn to appreciate and no doubt love as you do.

I don't even know if I'll be able to fish in South Dakota this Spring.....got to watch every penny...........I truly wish I could be there you seem a genuine gentleman, with a great sense of humor and I'm proud to know you, and hopefully some day we can meet in person, eat my deer and toast me to your fishing sucess I hope it brings you good fortune.

Amen to that.....been trying to get Menards to pay me for mileage but they aint going for it.

Later this Spring 'after tax time' I should get a decent return 'after all the money I spent in the last 6 months' maybe there will be a little 'traveling money' left over and we could come for a visit and partake of some your fine fishing in the north.

Around here all we have is 'hatchery' rainbows stocked a couple times a year in local lakes, not much sport in that.....they are so hungury when they are put in anything with a scent to it will catch them (the kids enjoy it though....don't have to wait long for a bite.) , would love to catch a 'wild' trout, or just fish in another state...only fished in Neb. and S. Dakota.....would relish the oppurtunity to try a different area, who knows it could happen.

this weekend is a stocked lake outing in the superior national forest..(super natural forest)
they open the season for a brief period in the winter for psycho trout nuts and then shut it back down. we fish the wild strains all summer in the big pond. lake superior. you can shore cast, river fish or deep lake troll, handlining, flyfishing or spin cast with bait rigs.
some of the fish or impressive...we have many varities..randy man and i last fall had a day on salmon like you dream about...think next fall brother...tw

The lake I fished in South Dakota is supposed to have 'brownies' and or lake trout but I have never caught one.....thought I had one......was using a leech and casting into the tailrace waters down from the damn.....line had barely hit the water and I set the pole down to cast out the second pole (you can have 2 poles with 2 hooks) and had to drop 2nd pole and dive for the first one.......already had half the pole in the water......set the hook and 50 yards out a dark brown figure lept from the water and did an impressive tail dance and the fight was on...........turned out to be a 7 lb. carp...but it was a great fight but those are just not my fish of choice.........now salmon on the other hand that is something I would very much enjoy.

OK Tim

I got to tell ya.. this “a day of salmon fishing you dream about” That TW is talking about – that’s a big understatement!!

I spent the day listening to some of the coolest stories on the planet – just like the ones on his CD at http://kunaki.com/Sales.asp?PID=PX00ZICI38

We fished just about every river system along the north shore! I got to take some picture perfect shots like the ones below! Then at the end of what seemed like a perfect day I watched the mast Trout Whisper fight a fish all the way down stream to the big lake. Over rapids, up, down stream – this was an all out battle! Hey! It gets better!! At the same time he is fighting this fish down stream a bald eagle grabs one from the water between us!

There I stood, in the stream with my camera only 10 yards away and all I could do is stand there and soak it all in to my memory banks!

Tell ya what – anyone would be a fool not to take Trout Whisper up on a trip fishing with him! I know this weekend will be another one to remember!

Not trying to call ya a fool!
