I have a hard time just remembering the '80s (Ask my wife). But what I do remember is the first family trip my father took me on to Lake Lizze in Minnesota. What a wonderful experience. One pound sunfish and plenty of them. A lively red worm tipped with whole kernel corn was the bait of choice. I can still remember frantically digging into that corn can trying to find just the right kernel for my Dad and then watching the pure excitement on his face as he hooked into the next slab sunny. He would always hand me the rod and let me pull it in. The feel of that sunny spinning circles and the rod a bendin' hooked me on fishing for life.

When it comes down to it, our lives consist only of memories. Some of the best memories were fishing with my Dad and, later, the pure joy of watching my Dad teaching my two sons how to make their own memories. By the smile on my son, Cody's face, Dad you did good. The boys and I miss ya.

I would enjoy hearing about your experiences.

We lived in southern Minnesota when I was a kid and I fished the Minnesota river a lot. So the frist fish that I can remember was a big old nasty carp. If you ever cought a big carp you know how they fight, I was hooked on fishing after that.

3 spots come to mind when I think of big carp. They would be the following:

The Mill Pond in Clearwater,MN. Just below the little damn in Clearwater,MN. Stand 10 feet from the damn and throw the doe ball in the current and hang on. Go there when the current is flowin.

St. Cloud SCSU damn. Go there when the damn is closed and they will be trapped and easy to catch.

The same goes for Blancherd dam (sp?) by Royalton in MN on the Miss.

HUGE Carp in all these locations!

Ask Modman about big walleyes in the Mill Pond as well early season.

Hey HOGEYE,

Glad you remembered. The Mill Pond was our favorite place for carpin' with a bow.

One year we were fishing the Mill Pond one day before fishing opener and wetting our lines with crawlers - just testing the equipment on Carp before heading north. Snagged into one and what a battle! There was an old picnic table submerged in the pond and this old gal was determined to head straight for it. Several times I had to run the bank to try and keep her out of the wood. Well, after fifteen minutes that carp was landed but turned out to be the funniest looking carp I ever saw. As the crowd gathered around, with a tear in my eye and no camera, they watched me release a ten pound walleye.
