Ol' JustNorth had the pleasure of being invited to the Deer River area to spend the weekend with JN Members Marley and Cabin Queen.

We always look forward to visiting the area - it is truly God's country.

We started out on Friday by spending some time on the water in search of 'Eyes. We worked the deep water humps running Lindy rigs and leeches without much success. The may fly hatch was in all its glory and the water levels were high with an abundance of minnows. Marley managed to hook into one walleye and it was a dandy 25 incher that was photographed and released. A little caution - when releasing a walleye, don't assume that the fish is played out. Marley learned this the hard way. During the release this feisty female made a sudden move and split Marley's thumb open with her gill plate. Please be careful.

Saturday morning we set out for another try at fishing. We had one of my favorite fishing buddies along - Marley's English Setter. We decided to try stepping up the presentation and started cranking #5 raps. The result was alot of small northern action and a few small eyes.

Upon our return to the dock, we were greeted by a mother Mallard and her ducklings sunbathing on the dock. This is when the action really got started. Marley's setter spotted the duck family just about the time mother hen was instructing the babies to head for the hills. As the ducklings began swimming for the middle of the lake, in the water goes the setter and begins swimming after mother hen. I know its not supposed to be funny but you would think that a dog, of that intelligence, would finally realize what mother hen was up to. As she led our little buddy away from the ducklings, she would let the dog get close to her, fly another 20 yards and repeat. This went on for 30 minutes. That poor dog would still be swimming if we hadn't made a rescue operation. As we pulled her and ten pounds of weeds from her chest into the boat. We reminded her, again, don't do that. The poor setter, wet and scolded, spent the afternoon in jail - if you can call lounging on a pillow in a beautiful half log and knotty pine porch jail.

That afternoon we journeyed to Blackduck, MN for a little golf action. If you have never had the opportunity to golf the Blackduck course - try it. It is a par 36 - nine hole course that is being well maintained. A little word of advise: Be in shape. With its rolling and hilly fairways, I think it was designed for billy goats. Marley claims it is his way of getting in shape for the upcoming Colorado Elk hunt. I don't know...

Upon our return to the St. Cloud area we were invited by JN members Putter, Mina, and Grub to spend the 4th with their families. A pleasurable day of good food, good friends, horse shoes, rings, pontoon rides, and local fireworks viewed from the pontoon that evening.

All in all a wonderful weekend with good friends and great memories. I hope you enjoyed the same. Tells us about your adventures.

Enjoy life and enjoy the experience,
Ol' JustNorth

The Randy Man spent his 4th getting some yard work done - I did have the time to check out a couple of lakes near me. We got into some beautiful sunfish and even found some crappie.

With summer here - and the 80+ degree temps - remember to bring along sun screen and water!! I forgot this weekend - NOT A GOOD PLAN!! I was fine - but the sunburn could have been avoided!

Anyway - be safe

REMEMBER - Enjoy the Experience!!!!!!!!!
