So, I've never been a muskie fishing woman, however, my best fishing buddy is my fishing boyfriend. He is bound and determined to catch a muskie this summer! I've heard they are a 1 in 10,000 casts fish. Over the weekend on Lake vermilion after a long day of fishing for miskies and catching lots of pike we started to pack our gear up. This boat that was trolling around us about 100 yards from our boat started fighting a big fish. After a half an hour or so, the guy landed a 42 inch muskie. The second he pulled it out of the water we could see the bright orange rear fins and new immediatly. Then we pulled out the binocs to get a closer look. After he released his fish we had to troll over and ask the fishermans details. Lucky for him he had his digital camera with and showed us the pictures with a huge grin on his face. All summer we have been trying to catch on of these fish with no success. At least I saw someone else catch on giving me a little more faith in my self. Anyone have some good personal stories about catching the beast muskie?

Tonight was actually my first time that I actually targeted those toothy critters. I trolled around Lake Bemidiji for 2 hours and didn't catch any muskies. One small 3# northern was boated by my fishing partner though. I seem to hook more muskies as incidentals while trolling cranks for eyes. I have lost 3 skis this year so far. I had one to the side of the boat that I would say was about 52" after measuring where his head and tail were adjacent to the boat before he snapped off (fire line by the way). That was a big fish!! I have not seen the others that I have lost, but it gets spendy loosing $7 crankbaits to those dang things. |

New member and poster here--but I have lot's of 25 pound plus muskies with a good number over 30 pounds. There is undoubtedly a lack of fairness among the muskie god's. But as far as increasing the percentages in your favor the NUMBER ONE rule to remember is to put high percentage lures in high percentage spots a high percentage of the time. That means primarily 3 things. 1. Spend some time learning the seasonal patterns and movements of the muskie. Learn the biology and biological clock of the species. 2. Learn the way that the biological clock is played out on the water you are fishing. For example, the spawn is at very different times and areas in a ciscoe/lake trout lake than it is in a dark, very shallow weed choked lake ot river. In the lake trout lake the muskies spend a good portion of the year suspended with the trout ot ciscoe schools. Not so in a 1000 acre weed choked dark water glaciel lake. They will be with their dinner table. 3. What lures and presentations allow me to put the best lure in the face of an active fish for the longest length of time on the waters I am fishing. The person who unlocks those 3 keys on the water they fish will not need to make 10,0000 casts in order to boat skis. High percentage lures in high percentage spots a high percent of the time will give you consistent success in relatively short order. Good Fishing, The Fisher |

Fisher -- could not put it better myself!! Sounds like you put a little time on the water going after Musky! What is your favorite time of the year? For me - I enjoy the fall Musky hunt - seems to me most folks stop fishing after labor day and as far as I can tell - this is prime time! Enjoy the Experience Randy Man |

Randyman, I have to agree with you. The fall musky pursuit is probably the most enjoyable. Expectations and success on larger fish often happen then. It is also just a great time to be out on the water with a nip in the air, lots of color in the leaves until they drop. Sometimes breaking a little skim ice off at the launch as you savor a stiff cup of java--ahh the stuff dreams are made of! I personally enjoy the live bait presentations you can add to you casting/trolling at this time of year also. Put's some extra variety in there and if you have kids with you it is something they get a kick out off also. My personal bests in terms of size of fish have come in the fall so it is a confidence time as well. I really enjoy the spring too and it is similar in that few folks seem to fish the opener or any time after it until warmer summer type weather comes. Spring has been a very productive time as well. Tactics are totally different. I can't even count the number (and I'm sure you know of lot's as well) of guys I know or was with who were walleye/crappie fishing with a jig and minnow and hooked into a large esox in early spring. That said though, fall is special--if you can fish cisco/tulibee forage base lakes it really concentrates the biggest muskies in the system as well. WOW-- all this talk has gotten me wound up----I will have to switch to decaf until I can get the boat out! Good Fishing, Jason "The Fisher" Pence |

Has anyone stuck a really big pig this fall? I have seen some and heard of several more. It seems after several years of being told "your fishery is down" and that "there are no pure wisconsin dna strain muskies left" that the fish showed up this year! Biggest year in a long time in terms of monster muskies for Wisconsin. Anyway, wherever they were at--does anyone have a good story and/or picture of a really good muskie they have boated this fall? Hi Fisher, I know that RandyMan is on field assignment this week. When he reads this post, I sure would like to hear the story about the Muskie his wife, Babes, caught. Another great story is: Jacqui Justin took 3rd place, with this 48" Muskie on June 14, 2003, in the Metro Muskie Tournament on Eagle Lake, Mn. The guy in the background, on the other boat, landed this fish the year before and took 2nd. Catch and Release - what a great opportunity for all fisherpeople. You'll notice a split in the upper left hand side of the fishes lip - that is how they knew it was the same fish. Big muskie stories are great. Let's hear more... |
