As you get older, you hopefully get wiser. 
When my kids were first old enough to fish, I was, at the time an avid Big Pike guy (still am). I lived for pike. I would tell stories to my two sons about the thrill of the hookset and the battle that was soon to follow.
My biggest mistake was trying to get the boys into Pike right away. Soon the boredom set in and "I want to go home" was soon to follow.
After learning this lesson with Number 1 son, I soon corrected my fishing Dad strategy and, by the time Number 2 son was ready to fish, we spent many enjoyable hours catching panfish together.
As the years progressed, and the boys got older, they now share the thrill of landing big, toothy critters with me.
