I read an interesting article by Glen Schmitt, in the St. Cloud Times, regarding the new Minnesota State record bass. The title of the article was "Don't treat record fish negatively".
Glen had commented, "Is there really any need to create a buzz about whether, or not, or to what extent, Mark Raveling broke the law by transporting his state record largemouth bass in a livewell full of water?".
He went on to discuss the Minnesota regulations and the possible violations that exist. One for transporting a live fish and the other for not draining his livewell after leaving the lake.
The first is to make sure anglers don't catch fish on one lake and release them into another. The latter is to prevent the spread of exotic species such as Eurasian milfoil which already exists in more than 170 lakes and streams.
Glen went on to state that State regulations prohibit the transportation of live fish. Legally everyone is supposed to drain their livewell, buckets, and coolers before they leave the lake. Legally, we're supposed to make sure our catch is dead before we head for home.
Glen's conclusion was that the DNR had no intention of citing Raveling, we should relish the fact that a new State record bass was caught and there is no way negative spin should be applied to this situation. He feels Mark Raveling didn't deserve a ticket and the State record bass should be the story, not how the fish was recognized as such. He goes on to conclude that the DNR could use this situation to reexamine regulations and that maybe it is time to review the policy for recognizing a state-record fish.
What do you think? |

Ok, doesn't it say some place in the rules of catching and registering a record fish, that it must be alive at weigh in.. I also know that they (D.N.R.) x-ray fish to insure that no one has tampered with the weight, like stuffing sinkers in it. And also fish start loosing weight after they are caught from the stress. It's great that the record was broke (to bad it wasn't me that did it.) he tried to profit from this fish by taking all over and showing it off. It's just to bad for the fish, and us cause now that big bass wont pass on those genes to produce bigger bass. LET IT GO, SO IT CAN GROW…... |
