My son Justin, and I, started JustNorth Outdoors shortly after WebDude
got myFishingPals cooking. As a boy scoutmaster, I had just completed my
task of helping Justin and several other young men obtain the rank of Eagle
scout. Justin has always wanted to give back something to the outdoor
community and he was concerned that many young kids were not taking up
hunting, fishing, and other outdoor activities. For this reason
JustNorth.com was conceived.
I don't recall how it happen, but fate had brought WebDude and I together.
To this date, I believe we have formed a synergy together and share many of
the same feelings about how an outdoors site should be run. I appreciate his
friendship.
In one of our first conversations, we discussed the idea of not charging the
resort owner, bait shop owner, etc. for promoting their business on our
sites. I admit, I struggled with this concept. I agreed with WebDude, but I
also, at the time, had been senior web developer for a company who had sold
their software division and I found myself with a family to support and no
source of income. We have since established many levels of participation for
resort owners, guides, and bait shop owners whereby they have the
opportunity to help the JustNorth Community by displaying our banners at
their locations, offering fishing reports, offering discounts to our
members, and sponsoring our community contests. Depending on their level of
involvement, advertising could be free.
I believe there can be a happy medium between a free site and a commercial
site. I believe that people need unbiased and good, solid information. As,
WebDude, Scumfrog, and other myFishingPals members will attest, we have
always welcomed their postings on JustNorth Outdoors. If you see a
JustNorth recommended resort,
JustNorth recommended fishing guide, or JustNorth recommended bait shop,
on our site, it is because that resort, guide, or bait shop owner is
participating in our JustNorth Kids program or helping our JustNorth
Outdoors community grow. We think this a Win/Win situation for everybody.
One of our most popular outdoor columnists is RandyMan Johnson. Heck,
RandyMan sells school buses. But you know what, in his travels throughout
Minnesota, he has seen darn near every lake, resort, and hunting area in the
state. He talks straight, by his own admission can't spell very well, and
tells it like it is.
Like, WebDude, a post will not get deleted from our site unless it is a
blatant attempt to cram an unwelcome product or service on our community or,
most importantly hurt the kids in any way.
So, what is the happy medium? The simple truth is a web site owner needs a
large volume of visitors to their site. Why? Because, as WebDude had
mentioned, "in the future, I may decide to offer some advertising space to
some of the big corporations". You don't attract large corporations without
showing them large volumes of visitors and members.
How do you attract large volumes of visitors? You give the community the
information they need and you always speak the truth. You don't fear sharing
information with a like minded site. You build bridges with these
communities - not try to tear them down.
At JustNorth Outdoors, we appreciate our friendship with WebDude and his
fishing pals. Together we are stronger and we hope this friendship continues
to grow.Tanks,
Buck |
