I was going to adopt a Newfie that was surrendered to FOA in Cloquet.by his family because they had to move. I was told the dog would be there on Monday he wasn't going anywhere. Well last Monday after a month stay at FOA they shipped him to Golden Valley Humane. I called them and was assured he would be fine "evaluated" and I was waiting to hear back to adopt him. Thursday I received a call that he hadn't passed his "food test" he apparently show his teeth when they tested him. Now saw this big fellow twice, he obeyed his commands and a tech actually hand fed him something when I was there the first time. He was obviously depressed. When I asked the guy from Golden Valley if that now meant this dog would be killed he said yes.
I asked them to give this poor dog a chance to settle in. He arrived at Golden Valley and was tested the next day after spending a month at FOA and losing his home. Obviously the dog was once again traumatized.
No mercy there. I actually felt there was a sense of accomplishment to put this sweet dog down. I interacted with him in Cloquet and he was a good dog. I am literally sick that they are going to or have euthanized this animal.
Can you help??

| I'm sorry to say there isn't much I can do to help. The evaluation process for every shelter is going to vary. Some do not even evaluate the dogs before putting them up for adoption. Personally, I feel this is a disservice to the public. Food aggression can be very serious, especially when it is a dog the size of a Newfie and even worse when a child is involved. A shelter is also at some risk with liability (not to mention morally) if they knowingly place an animal that has shown aggression. Have you ever tried looking for a Newfie on www.petfinder.com? Or a Newfie rescue group? |

Thank you for the response. I understand that aggression of any type can be serious. As well as the liability risks involved. The issue wasn't in adopting a Newfie. It was after this Newfie had been left by a family at the first shelter for a month and after interacting with this dog (sweet, gentle, obedient) I was willing to adopt him for those very reasons. I wanted to make certain he would be safe and have a good home. Not be further traumatized or put down. It is such a shame. He would have had a home on acreage with no children around and a pond to play in. I do appreciate your response. It's just been a bad business all around. |

Yes, not a favorable experience. Hopefully you won't have negative feelings to all shelters because of it. Your intentions were honorable. I'd be happy to help you find a dog to fit in on your acreage and in the pond. The following is a description of a dog (Lab Rottie mix) that I bet would love your place if you are interested: My name is Midnight and I am very smart. I lived with another dog, a goat and children ages 10, 15 and 17 in my previous home. I will chase cats, so it would probably be best if I am not around them. I love to play with water - from the hose or in a lake. My previous owners want you to know that I am very protective of people and I will come to you if you need help. I am also very protective around children and I am cautious around strangers. When my human children were swimming in the lake, I always swam around them in a circle so they were safe. I will attack a lawn sprinkler until it just can't work anymore. I am big, and I have a big heart as well. I could use some obedience classes so I can learn what you folks call manners. See the staff at the shelter or the website under events to find out more information. I can't wait to meet you. I know how to sit and fetch, and I'm sure you can teach me many more things. I am not housetrained because I've been an outdoor dog. I am 1.5 years old. You can see a picture on our website www.tricountyhumanesociety.org |
