i am hunting in northern idaho and am wondering when the pre rut "by date" is in this area i would really like to know when this is mainly because i like to rattle for them in the post rut.and know that it is better in the pre rut as many friends have told me.i also am hunting in a new area about 1 square mile with no hunters other than me.what would be the best tactic towards rattling.

Welcome vivtar

I am not sure of the pre and post rut dates for idaho but have rattled in some very nice animals here in Northern Minnesota during the pre rut. I like to use a buck grunt call along with using rattling. My favorite is using the grunt in the am and move to the rattling just after sun up. I will often do a grunt call in between my rattle also. I have found this brings in the active bucks in the area pretty fast!

Most of the bigger bucks seem to come in after I have had one or more smaller bucks come into the area - so its always a good idea to wait for the big boy.

Hope this helps!

vivitar,
Welcome to JN!

I am not sure that the rut fal on a specific date. I am at a similar latitude here in northern MN and the pre-rut/chasing phase generally takes place during the last week in October and the first week in November. I have had my best luck rattling during the last week in October, although I have brought in deer earlier.

I would get into an area where you have a good view and start with a few grunts in case there is a buck nearby. Only after this would I try rattling. Hope this helps. Good luck.
