Staying Warm While Winter Camping
If you stop to take a water or snack break, store the outer shell of your mittens or gloves in your pack or attach them to your jacket with a clip. Sticking them under your arm makes it easier to have them blow away with a gust of wind. If you lose a mitten, use a spare sock as a substitute.

Hot Dog Delight
Place a hot dog on a hot dog fork or one of your homemade wood sticks, and wrap a slice of bacon around it. Hold the bacon in place with a toothpick. Broil over hot coals in your campfire, being careful to hold it high enough over your coals, so it won't burn. When the hot dog and bacon are cooked through, remove the toothpick and enjoy right off the stick or place it in a bun with your favorite condiments. Fun to make and eat!!!

Fire Starting Tips
Here are a couple fire starting tips: Laundry lint usually makes good tinder. Put wooden matches into corrugated cardboard strips and dip into wax for easy fire starters. Wax coated milk cartons cut into strips also work great. Waterproof matches by dipping in melted paraffin/wax, fingernail polish or shellac. Prescription bottles can be used to store waterproof matches. Dry wood shaving in the oven and store in ziplock bags for tinder during rainy days. Birchbark burns when wet. Don't kill living trees though.

Road Trippers Washing Machine
Take a 5 gallon bucket and fill with clothing, soap, and water. Secure this to the part of your rig that bounces the most. When you get done traveling for half or longer a day your clothing will just need rinsing and drying. That is of course unless your driving down very smooth roads.

Pack Lightweight Meat
Fry up your burger, chicken chunks or other meats with your seasonings of your choice (even onions). Take the finished product and dehydrate it and vacuum seal the bag. Just added water to rehydrate and your in business! I do this with hamburger for the BWCA and it works great. I take the hamburger helper out of the boxes and label the bags for more ease and space saving as well!

Keeping Pots and Pans Clean While Camping
Apply a layer of dishsoap on a pan prior to placing it over a fire. The soap will collect the suet instead of the pan. Please don't wash the dishes in the lake though as many soaps contain large amounts of phosphates which contribute to rapid plant growth and aging of a water body.

Leave a Note When Hiking
You can locate trail maps from the park service office, scout them carefully before deciding on a trail. Do not overestimate your fitness level, or the length of time it will take you to hike the trail. It is better, particularly in the beginning, to be conservative. Once you have decided on a trail, write down the name of the trail and the time you start your hike and leave it on the dashboard of your car. If something should happen to your group, this will make the park ranger’s job much easier.

Be Prepared For Bad Weather
In addition, in your fanny pack or nap sack you should stick a small flashlight and a poncho or trash bag that you can use as a poncho. Even the nicest weather can change quickly, and nothing will make you more miserable than trudging back to your car, soaking wet. The flashlight is one of those things that you will hopefully never need, but if an emergency arises, or you get lost, you will certainly be glad to have it.

Be Prepared Mentally for Backpacking
Be prepared mentally that much of backpacking is very hard work. Minimize the distance you plan to travel on the first day or so, to give your body time to adjust to this new regime of strenuous labor.

Bring a Tarp
Taking a 6 by 8 foot tarp to rope over the tent gives usually as much protection as almost any three season tent (a tent designed for spring through fall weather).

Backpacking Beginner Essentials
The three essentials in getting started backpacking are a good pack, a dry sleeping bag, and a dependable stove. Money can be saved by acquiring a simple A frame pup tent, which usually costs no more than 25 dollars
