Loading a deer alone
First drop your tailgate and then slide one end of the plywood to the ground. Then roll the deer onto the wood. Now you can raise the lower end of the plywood sheet and slide it into the truck using your legmuscles rather than your back. This reduces the risk of back injuryand keeps your clothing cleaner too.

Safe Deer Hunting - Tree Stand Hunting
Hunting Deer: If you are going to bowhunt or gun hunt out of a tree, make sure you are always tied to the tree going up or down. I use a safety line with a prussik knot that can save my life anytime. If you'd like instructions on how to set this up, send me your email address and I'll send you the info free. Safe hunting, Jim safetreehunt@yahoo.com

Hunting Deer: Quite Snack Time in the Deer Woods.
Avoid bringing noisy packaging material into the deer woods. Open and store food in a zip-lock bag before leaving camp. Don't want the buck of a lifetime getting away due to a noisy candybar wrapper.

Buy a Box of Rubber Gloves.
While Deer hunting, I always keep a supply of rubber gloves handy. Whether it is for gutting a deer or just filling up the truck with gas (scent control) they are sure handy during hunting season.

Deer Hunting - Waiting For The Perfect Shot
Why wait for that perfect broadside shot? Take the first lethal shot you feel comfortable with. How many times have you watched the deer walk away, only to think later, I could have taken him if I hadn't waited.

Shooting From A Tree Stand
Hunting Deer: Practice shooting from an elevated position, preferably sitting down. Many people climb their stands and miss or worse yet wound a deer, only to find out they shoot different from the elevated and sitting position.

Deer Hunting Cheap Masking Scent
A cheap masking scent can be made from a solution of warm water and baking soda. You can also wash your clothes in baking soda to eliminate odors. The baking soda also makes a good powder for checking wind direction.

Don't Pack Away That Fishing Gear - Use it for Deer Hunting
Just because it's hunting season doesn't mean you should pack all your fishing gear away. A fishing creel packed with deer tracking equipment: (batteries, survival kit, first aid kit, etc...) makes an excellent tote bag for all those needed items.

Stop That Deer
Many times a hunter can stop a moving deer by using a deer call or a short sharp whistle. This could provide the hunter the needed time to get the shot off.

Tree stands are popular among hunters, but must be used safely
Tree stands are popular among hunters, but must be used safely Tree stands are popular among hunters - especially among those who archery hunt because they help improve the hunters’ visibility and decrease the chance their scent will spook prey. But the stands also can result in injuries or even fatalaties if they’re used incorrectly or carelessly, hunting safety experts say...keep reading

Bad Luck
Bad Luck They say deer hunting involves a lot of luck, but not all of it is good. It was calm that morning, and sharply cold, with the temp somewhere between -5 and 0. The luck that day started early. While loading the muzzleloader in my office, it slipped and fell to the floor, breaking the front sight into 4 pieces. Bad luck? Yeah, but there was also a bit of brain fog left over from ice fishing the night before. I hastily attempted to recover by using my spare muzzleloader for loaner parts, the front sights were similar, but not identical, and I knew where I was going hunting was a 30 yard maximum range for a shot. It would have to do...keep reading

Bowhunting With the Lonewolf
Bowhunting With the Lonewolf

I received my new Lonewolf climbing treestand in the mail last week and was very anxious to try out this new piece of engineering. I decided to come down to St. Cloud and hunt some of the old stompin' ground for the weekend. Since I moved to Bemidji a friend of mine has been nice enough to hunt my area for me. They got a nice 7 pt. basket and a very nice 8 pt. with a 19 inch spread out of the stands I hunt. The latter was 230 lbs dressed by the way...

How to Find a Wounded Deer

Once you fire, if you don't immediately hear the smack of the bullet entering the buck's body, watch its reaction. If it doesn't fall down right away (which, if you're using the proper caliber and are a decent shot, should happen) see how it runs away. If it hunches up, odds are you shot it in the stomach. If its front half drops toward the ground, you probably just missed hitting the heart, hitting him somewhere else in the front portion of the body. If it jumps and charges forward, though, you probably just obliterated its heart with the perfect shot and shouldn't have to go far to retrieve your trophy...

Deer Hunting - Do activated-carbon garments really work?
Deer Hunting - Do activated-carbon garments really work?

The extreme commercialization of bow hunting has, in my opinion, resulted instances where hunters have been duped. In fact, I can think of several products that are down right gimmicks and obviously seek to play upon consumer ignorance and slob hunters looking for success shortcuts...
