| Eelpout Fishing - Minnesota Lobster |
I can remember the first Eelpout I saw - it was late into the evening and the rattle reel was moving ever so slowly. I set the hook and began yelling to my sleeping fishing partner," Got a big Eelpout on - get up and give me a hand with this big bad boy!" After rolling out of bed, Jerry walked over to the hole - looked down at the fish swimming under the ice and said " cut the line!"...keep reading |

| Late Ice Is Great Ice |
I’m not talking about the quality of the ice itself but the about your opportunity to enjoy some of the best fishing of the hard water season. Once the calendar roles around to late February or early March a lot of the enthusiasm for ice fishing has waned. Just as you begin to notice less and less anglers out, all species of fish activity will be increasing proportionally...keep reading |

| Ice Fishing - Late Ice and Going for it! |
Everyone would love to catch more fish during late ice. Ice anglers seem to fall into a more relaxed routine when they head out onto the ice this time of the year. They may catch a few fish but once they stop catching fish, it is blamed on the fish - "they just stopped biting". My personal favorite is "fish stop eating late ice". This is just not a fact!...keep reading |

| Large Baits and Late Ice |
In my neck of the woods (Northeastern South Dakota) I consider late ice, to be the period from mid February until you can no longer safely venture out. By this stage in the game most of the enthusiasm for drilling holes has greatly diminished. This is due to the fact that the bite has probably been tough for sometime and most folks are getting a little burned out. As the days get longer, thoughts start turning to open water, reorganizing tackle and attending Sport Shows...keep reading |

| Ice Fishing With Rattle Reels |
I love to ice fish - and spend alot of nights sleeping in the house with one ear open waiting for the sound of a large fish taking out line. Rattle reel fishing is not new and is not the most productive way to catch fish on ice. That being said - this form of fishing is the most used in fish houses today. Maybe it is because you can spend time doing other things, like sleeping, and still have the opportunity to catch fish...keep reading |

| Ice Fishing Basics |
Well the lakes in Minnesota are going to freeze over, it's imminent. Whether people like it or not, fishing can only be done through the ice on the 10,000 plus lakes in Minnesota this Winter. A lot of people I know simply love to ice fish, while others can't wait for the ice to melt. I always ask those of the latter why they don't ice fish, the number one response I get is, "It's dangerous." Well I'd like to help get those people on the ice this year by telling them what they need to get started, and also some precautions they can take to feel and be more safe this Winter...keep reading |

| Deer Stand Walleye Fishing - Part II - Late Ice |
This article is an extension of what we discussed in Part 1. I like to call this time of the year REAL hard ice. It is when the ice gets past 2 feet thick and -50 is not uncommon. This is when you need to change how you go after old marble eyes. Walleye begin to move into a different pattern this time of the year and the three main steps for hunting them down like you would a deer also changes... keep reading |

| Deer Stand Walleye Fishing |
Ice fishing is much like deer hunting from a stand. In order to be successful you must be in the best place at the correct time using the right gear or you are just not going to do very well. Knowledge of the fish you plan to take is also a very important when still fishing on ice. I know of no deer hunter who would go to the woods and set up next to a group of other hunters. There are just to many things that can spook off a deer or walleye for that matter...keep reading |

Stop drilling holes, use your electronics
I laugh when I see it, two guys with a vexilar flasher and an auger checking the depth through the ice. Instead squirt a little water on a good piece of flat bubble free ice and place the transducer of the unit on the ice and "read" through the ice--no drilling, no noise, and a good picture of whats down there. when fish are spotted, drill a hole--not before, save time, effort, blades, gas, and actually find fish without fishing. Doesn't take much, I started doing this in 1987 with a Lowarnce "Green box" w/ 2-- 6 volt batteries as power, Trust me, anything that is made now will work.

Corny Rainbows in shallows
Take a can of corn and dump a fair amount of it, preferably a quarter to a half of it down your hole. Once the corn has settled to bottom of hole, take a single hook and place one kernal of corn on it. Consistently jig your corn kernal about 6-12" of the bottom fairly slow to ensure an easy meal for any hungry trout nearby. But be sure to choose a reasonable depth!

Winter Perch Fishing Search
If you want to consistently ice some nice Perch, you might consider expending a little extra energy this season. This will require more than just asking questions at the local bait shop or going onto the ice and looking for the largest congregation of ice houses. At best, you will be fishing where the fish were yesterday, last week, or even last year. Although, the fringes of these areas can be a good place to start.

Hooks when ice fishing
When Ice Fishing, forget the single hook. Try putting triple hooks on each tip up. I use a #6-8 for Perch, but you can use any size you require. The triple hooks greatly imnprove your chance of hooking the fish. My experience indicates that about 1 in 3 fish are lost using a single hook, while 9 in 10 get hooked using triple hooks.

Marking line depth
I have found the best way to mark the depth of the line at which you are fishing is to put a small button on the line. Weave the line through 2 of the button eyes. This allows you to easily slid the button to the spot on the line that indicates the depth. Fast and easy way to mark line depth.

Hole Chumming
Take a bag of Ramen noodles and cook per the directions, without adding the spice packet. Drain and let cool. Place noodles in food processor and pulse until the noodles are roughly the length of wax worms or spikes. Drop a few down the hole every now and again to keep the fishing hole active. Check your state reg's for legality.

Depth Reminder
When finding the depth below your ice hole, pinch line and thread thru bead to retain depth measurement. This will save a lot more time when resetting your line.

ice fishing, "feed"
A tip to help you catch more fish than the rest of your friends. While your fishing, throw some shrimp (body shells) into the hole, and stomp your feet. another would be to make the water move rapidly with a pole.

Minnow Set Up for Ice Fishing
Place your hook on the side of the minnow, the minnow will work hard attempting to set itself upright. This will help bring in more fish. The more the minnow moves the better!

Keeping ice fishing hole warm in sub-zero conditions
An old-timers trick to keep ones hole open when the temp dips is to take a coffee can and punch holes all around and fill half full of charcoal. Light this unit and set it next to your hole so it is barely overlapping. This will keep a trickle of warm water entering your hole.

Ice Fishing Hole Covers
I use spools for speaker wire cut in half (the large bulk kind) plastic ones only. They are 12 inches across the top and easily cover a 10 inch auger hole. I run my line down the center of spool and it doesn't freeze at all. I lost a couple tip-ups down the hole before coming up with this idea and have had great success with the hole covers. They are light weight, durable, and stack up well in a 5 gallon pail which I use as a tackle box/seat.

Ice Fishing Light Bite Crappies
Prime time. You are in 30 to 32 feet of water and you are ready for crappie action. Try taking off that bobber. Many time the crappie bite is so light that your bobber will never indicate a strike.
